Jeanty claims top offensive honor, Cade Beresford recognized for second straight year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State sophomore Ashton Jeanty, one of the most dynamic players in the country, was named the Mountain West's Offensive Player of the Year Tuesday as the league announced its 2023 All-Conference Teams.

Boise State's Jeanty, Cade Beresford, Ahmed Hassanein and James Ferguson-Reynolds received All-Mountain West First Team honors while Kage Casey, Jonah Dalmas and Andrew Simpson were recognized with second team honors. Garrett Curran, A'Marion McCoy, Marco Notarainni, Seyi Oladipo and Alexander Teubner were listed on the honorable mention list.

Jeanty is just the second sophomore ever to be named Offensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West and just the third Bronco to receive the honor, following Kellen Moore (2011) and Brett Rypien (2018). The national leader in total first downs recorded (84) and second in the nation in total missed tackles forced (83), despite missing two full games, he also is the only player in the nation with multiple 50+ yard rushing touchdowns and multiple 50+ yard receiving touchdowns, racing downfield for two of each.

Beresford received all-conference honors for the second consecutive year after receiving first team honors in 2022. He leads an offensive line that ranks 12th in the nation in fewest sacks allowed and has been praised weekly for opening holes large enough for trucks to drive through, despite Jeanty and George Holani not needing nearly that much space.

Hassanein claimed his first career all-conference honor after finishing the regular season ranked fifth in the country with 12.0 total sacks after only recording 1.5 sacks across the first four games. His sack tally ties Kamalei Correa's 12.0 sacks in 2014 as the sixth-most in a single season in Boise State history. The first player from Egypt to play college football, he has currently recorded a sack in eight consecutive games, a streak that leads the nation.

Completing the regular season as the national leader in punting by nearly two full yards, Ferguson-Reynolds is one of only three punters in the nation with multiple punts of 70 yards or more this season. He is the only punter among the 10 Ray Guy Award semifinalists that sends more than half of his punts over 50 yards. If his season ended today, Ferguson-Reynolds' average of 50.08 yards per punt would rank fifth in NCAA history.

A redshirt freshman, Casey receives all-conference honors in his first season of competition. He joins Beresford in guiding an offensive front that ranks 12th in the nation in fewest sacks allowed.

Dalmas is recognized by the Mountain West for the fourth time in his career, garnering second team honors this season. He ranks tied for 16th in the nation with a .857 field goal percentage this season and is tied for 19th in the country by averaging 1.50 field goals per game.

Simpson ranks 25th in the nation by averaging 1.2 tackles for a loss per game and 17th nationally with two fumbles recovered. His numbers are made even more impressive considering a broken hand has left him playing with a clubbed cast on his right hand for the past month.

Garnering votes, Curran, McCoy, Notarainni, Oladipo and Teubner all received honorable mention honors. This marks the second time Curran has been recognized by the MW while the other four earned their first recognition.

Colorado State's Mohamed Kamara was named the Defensive Player of the Year.  UNLV swept the final three awards with Jose Pizano being named Special Teams Player of the Year, Justin Maiava being named Freshman of the Year and Barry Odom being named Coach of the Year.

On Saturday, Boise State will compete in its seventh MW Championship Game, kicking off at UNLV at 1 p.m. MT/Noon PT on FOX. The seven appearances is the most of any team in the league and a win would secure a conference-leading fifth championship for the Broncos.
