Hamdan adds Associate Head Coach title
LOS ANGELES – Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson announced Wednesday that Bush Hamdan will be retained on staff as the team's offensive coordinator while adding the title of associate head coach. Hamdan's new contract is subject to approval by the Idaho State Board of Education.
Hamdan's deal, solidified this week, comes as the Broncos are in Los Angeles preparing for the Starco Foods LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk.
"Over the past year I have come to get to know Bush Hamdan, working closely with him," Danielson said. "In that time, he has shown that his knowledge of the game and creativity in calling plays is impressive. He and I both agree in the approach that our offense should always be opportunistic and on the attack. Asking Bush to stay was one of my first priorities in building this staff and I am incredibly excited that he will remain at Boise State."
In his first season guiding the Bronco offense, Hamdan has led an explosive unit that has had one of its most successful seasons in recent years. He guided the team to nine-straight games scoring 30 or more points, matching national semifinalists Michigan and Texas for the second-longest streak in the nation and the longest such streak for the Blue and Orange since 2011.
"I am very thankful to Coach Danielson for the opportunity to continue building what our staff has started over the past year," Hamdan said. "Boise State holds a special place in my family's heart and I have really enjoyed being back in the Treasure Valley. We have an incredible group of young men on this roster and I am eager to continue leading this group to championships and compete for Bronco Nation."
He also directed an offensive unit that saw Ashton Jeanty awarded All-America honors as well as being named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. One of the most dynamic tailbacks in the nation, Jeanty ranks second nationally in yards from scrimmage (1,814) and all-purpose yards per game (164.91) while averaging 4.7 yards per run after contact and 14.4 yards after catch per reception, both of which lead the nation. The team's rushing success, which ranks sixth nationally at 214.8 yards per game, was due in part to an offensive line that ranks 12th in the nation allowing only 1.08 sacks per game while converting 80% of fourth downs, a mark that ranks third nationally.
An alumnus of Boise State, Hamdan was a quarterback for the Broncos from 2004-08. His first season as a coach in the Treasure Valley was his 15th year of coaching, returning home following a three-year stint at Missouri where he coached wide receivers (2020-21) and quarterbacks (2020-22). The Tigers earned a bowl bid in each season Hamdan was on staff and Missouri ranked 32nd nationally in passing offense in 2020.
Hamdan began his coaching career as a student assistant with Colorado in 2009 and served as offensive intern with Maryland the following season. In 2011, he coached tight ends at Sacramento State on a staff that included former Bronco Andy Avalos as a graduate assistant.
In 2012, Hamdan mentored wide receivers at Florida, including four players who went onto the NFL (Andre Debose, Quinton Dunbar, Frankie Hammond and Solomon Patton). The Gators went 11-2 and played in the Sugar Bowl that season.
Hamdan was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas State in 2013 when the Red Wolves won the Sun Belt title and the GoDaddy Bowl.
After a season as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Davidson, Hamdan reunited with his college coach Chris Petersen as an offensive quality control coach at Washington in 2015.
Petersen promoted Hamdan to wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator the following season. The Huskies won the Pac-12 and reached the College Football Playoff. John Ross III and Dante Pettis combined to set a Pac-12 record with a combined 32 touchdowns receiving. Ross was named an All-American and selected as the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft while Pettis went in the second round.
Hamdan served as Washington's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in 2018-19. The Huskies won the Pac-12 in 2018 and registered 3,337 yards passing, the fourth-most in school history. Quarterback Jacob Eason was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
In between stints at Washington, Hamdan was the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan threw for over 4,000 yards and the Falcons reached the divisional round of the 2017 NFC playoffs.
Hamdan will direct the Boise State offense as they play UCLA in the Starco Brands LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk on Saturday, Dec. 16. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT/4:30 p.m. PT at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The game will air nationally on ABC.
