Bronco product, All-MW receiver begins sixth season coaching in the Treasure Valley

BOISE, Idaho – One of Boise State's own is staying in the Treasure Valley. Matt Miller, a 2014 Boise State alumnus and former receiver for the Broncos, is being retained on Spencer Danielson's coaching staff entering the 2024 season.

The announcement came from the Broncos' new head coach on Tuesday morning.

"As a Boise State alumnus, Matt Miller knows just what upholding the tradition of this program is all about," Danielson said. "Boise is his home and I am so glad he is staying in the Treasure Valley for another year. Our wide receiver corps will benefit greatly going into next season by the consistency he brings and his ability to develop that unit into one that will be among the best in the Mountain West. I look forward to a lot of growth in that position group next year."

The 2024 season will be Miller's sixth as a member of the coaching staff for the Blue and Orange. He originally served as a quality control staff member in 2015 before spending the next four years at Montana State. He returned to Boise State in 2020 as the wide receivers coach, a position he has remained in since.

During the 2023 season, Miller worked with a receiver corps that was one of the most improved units in the country as the Broncos' passing game improved by more than 40 spots by adding 30 yards receiving per game than the prior season.

That stark improvement came without the services of Latrell Caples, the team's leading receiver in 2022 when he totaled 549 yards receiving and 3.6 catches per game, as the Texas receiver spent the season recovering from a lower body injury.

Miller mentored All-Mountain West First Team honoree Khalil Shakir in 2021. Now a standout receiver for the Buffalo Bills, Shakir led the team in receptions (77), yards receiving (1,117) and touchdowns receiving (7) during the 2021 campaign.

Prior to returning to his alma mater, Miller spent four seasons at Montana State where he coached the receivers beginning in 2016 before being promoted to offensive coordinator midway through the 2018 season. He was also the Bobcats' recruiting coordinator from 2017 until his promotion. His guidance led the Bobcats to the FCS playoffs in both 2018 and 2019.

During the 2019 season, Montana State led the Big Sky Conference and ranked eighth nationally in rushing offense (258.1 yards per game) while ranking 25th nationally in total offense (426.5 yards per game), showcasing his ability has a play caller while reaping the rewards of his recruiting.

A native of Helena, Montana, Miller began his coaching career as an offensive quality control assistant at Boise State in 2015.

Miller was a wide receiver at Boise State (2011-14), earning Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America in 2011 before earning All-Mountain West honors in 2012 as part of the Broncos' conference championship team.

He repeated as an all-conference selection in 2013 and was the MVP of the 2013 Hawaii Bowl. As a senior, Miller was part of another Mountain West championship team, a squad that defeated Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

Miller ended his playing career as Boise State's career leader in receptions (244) while ranking second in receiving yards (3,049) and third in receiving touchdowns (29).

He earned his bachelor's degree in business from Boise State in 2014 and is married to the former Sarah Baugh, a standout volleyball student-athlete for the Broncos from 2012-15. Married in 2018, the couple has a daughter (Charley Ann) that was born in October 2022.
