BOISE, Idaho – Boise State safety JL Skinner and defensive tackle Scott Matlock were each selected in the 2023 National Football League Draft, Saturday.
Skinner was the Denver Broncos' sixth-round pick, 183rd overall, and Matlock went to the Los Angeles Chargers, also in the sixth round, 200th overall.
Skinner is the sixth member of the Blue and Orange to be drafted by Denver all-time, and the six selections of Boise State football players are the second-most by a single team, trailing only the Dallas Cowboys (seven).
He is the first Boise State player to be selected by Denver since offensive lineman Matt Paradis was also taken in the sixth round (No. 207 overall) in 2014. Skinner is the first Boise State safety to be drafted since Darian Thompson was selected in the third round (No. 71 overall) by the New York Giants in 2016.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Skinner was a first-team All-Mountain West honoree in 2022 and a second-team award winner in 2021. He led Boise State in tackles (92), solo tackles (66) and fumble recoveries (three) in 2021, and his two forced fumbles tied for the most among Bronco defenders.
In 2022, Skinner amassed 65 tackles, including 36 solo, led the team with four interceptions and broke up four passes.
Matlock is just the second Bronco to be drafted by the Chargers all-time, joining wide receiver Legedu Naanee, who was a fifth-round pick (No. 172 overall) in 2007. He is the first Boise State defensive tackle selected in the draft since 2012 when Billy Winn went 205th overall to the Cleveland Browns during the sixth round.
A native of Homedale, Idaho, Matlock was named to the All-Mountain West Second Team in both 2021 and 2022. He started 32 games over his final three seasons, racking up a career-high 49 tackles in 2022, which led all Bronco defensive linemen.
He recorded a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss in 2021, including seven sacks, and hauled in a pair of touchdown passes during his Boise State tenure.
Boise State has had a player drafted in 14-straight years, the longest streak by a school in a Group of Five Conference. It is tied for the 20th longest nationally.
The Broncos have now had a player with collegiate eligibility remaining drafted in 10-consecutive years. Boise State is one of only seven schools with such a streak, joining Alabama, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Penn State and Stanford.
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (2014) started the streak, followed by running back Jay Ajayi (2015), linebacker Kamalei Correa (2016), running back Jeremy McNichols (2017), linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (2018), running back Alexander Mattison (2019), offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland (2020), tight end John Bates and defensive back Avery Williams (2021) and wide receiver Khalil Shakir (2022).
