Boise State Athletics is spotlighting the graduate assistants who work to help each department within athletics run smoothly while obtaining their master's degree. These features will tell the stories of graduate assistants while also giving information on what each department within Boise State Athletics does.
Katie Macare is a first-year graduate assistant (GA) working within the graphic design branch of the creative services department at Boise State Athletics, while pursuing a degree in the Master of Athletic Leadership (MAL) program.
The graphic design department is responsible for developing, creating and upholding the brand of Boise State Athletics across all sport programs. It creates billboards, banners, event programs, social media content and any other requests the athletic department may have.
As a graphic design GA, Macare specifically works with men's and women's golf, Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) and BroncoLife. Her day-to-day tasks include creating and updating content for the two golf programs, attending meetings, responding to emails and collaborating with other departments on new ideas for graphics.
"Katie's creativity and attention to detail have been instrumental in promoting our golf program," said Boise State Women's Golf Head Coach Kailin Downs. "Given how important social media is with our student-athletes and recruits, Katie's work really helps us tell our stories. I am so appreciative of all of her time and efforts!"
The Boise State women's golf team finished the 2024 Mountain West Championship in seventh place. The Broncos now await the April 24 announcement of the 2024 NCAA Regional participants.
Macare is the first to be hired as a GA in the graphic design office, after having spent two years as an intern.
"Adding a GA to our department has been an impactful experience, particularly as Katie is the first to take on this role," said her supervisor and assistant director of graphic design, Colby Harms. "Her presence has provided invaluable support to the full-time staff allowing us more time to focus on managing sport-specific and department-wide projects effectively. Beyond mere assistance, Katie's addition has given us a fresh perspective on our day-to-day tasks, being a positive presence in our department that we are so lucky to have!"
Since she was an intern in the graphic design office prior to becoming a GA, there was no application process for getting the role. Macare was offered the option of continuing to grow and work in the department as a GA, as long as she continued her education by enrolling in the MAL.
"I completed my undergraduate degree at Boise State and knew that I still had opportunities to pursue here," said Macare. "I knew that I needed to enroll in the MAL if I wanted to continue growing as a professional. I have also been able to work for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl the past two years and plan on continuing to in the future. I love that I am able to gain experiences and skills that go beyond graphic design while obtaining my master's degree."
While she still has another year left in the MAL program, Macare knows she wants to continue working in athletics, particularly in the professional golf industry. She aspires to run events, social media, branding or anything that falls under the marketing umbrella for an organization.
"My favorite part of working in Boise State Athletics has easily been the people," said Macare. "I truly have developed the best friendships with my co-workers and have enjoyed all the little moments like celebrating birthdays and holidays together."
