BOISE, Idaho – Maya Dutta, an incoming freshman on the Boise State women's tennis team, is set to compete at the Wimbledon Junior Championships, Thursday, July 4, at the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Center in London. Dutta begins play in the qualifying round against Ruth Roura Llaverias, and with a win would advance to face the winner of Dune Vaissaud and Ada Kumru for a chance to move into the main draw.
Â
Dutta is one of 26 players competing in the qualifying round, and one of ten total Americans among the 72 athletes competing in the event.
Â
"What an incredible experience for Maya to be playing Wimbledon Juniors this week," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "As a tennis player growing up, everyone has dreamed of being able to play on that stage at arguably the most prestigious tennis event in the world."
Â
Dutta, set to join the Broncos in the fall, is a five-star recruit according to the Tennis Recruiting Network and currently ranks No. 113 in the International Tennis Federation Junior Rankings.
Â
The Australian Open Junior Championships is one of the four Junior Grand Slam tournaments played as part of the ITF Junior Circuit. Thirteen of 26 athletes will advance from qualifying play to the main draw for a chance to compete for the trophy.
Â
"Maya has a big game and can play very aggressive," said Roghaar. "She can be incredibly dangerous against the other top juniors in the world over there without a doubt. Only a handful of programs in the country can say they have an incoming freshman at Wimbledon. Everyone should start following her while she's in the Wimbledon whites then continue when she's here in Bronco Blue starting this fall."
