BOISE, Idaho – Boise State freshman women's tennis player Maya Dutta is set to compete in the U.S. Open Junior Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. The qualifying draw will be released Wednesday evening, and play will begin Thursday, Aug. 29.

This marks Dutta's third junior grand slam appearance in 2024, having already competed in the Australian Open and Wimbledon Championships. Dutta, a freshman from Dallas, Texas, is believed to be the first Bronco women's tennis player to compete in the event.

She is one of 32 total juniors and the only player from the Mountain West competing in the qualifying rounds. Dutta will look to be one of eight athletes to earn a spot in the main draw by earning two straight victories in qualifying.

Dutta, set to make her Boise State debut this fall, currently ranks No. 112 in the World Tennis Tour Junior Rankings.

"What an incredible opportunity for Maya next week in New York," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "To play one junior grand slam is an incredible accomplishment, but to have made three in the same calendar year is really special. I know Maya loved the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but obviously as a player growing up in the United States, the U.S. Open is the biggest dream and I can't wait to see her compete out there."

Roghaar is also making the journey to New York to scout potential future Broncos, with the added opportunity to cheer on Dutta simultaneously.

"I'm really looking forward to recruiting at the open this year," said Roghaar. "It's obviously an incredible level of junior tennis, and as our program continues to elevate to the most elite levels of the game, this is a place we really want to find more future Broncos. It's going to be awesome to be out there with Maya competing in the tournament as well as she wraps up her junior career on the world's biggest stage. It showcases the type of tennis being played in our program here at Boise State."
