Jeanty’s Career Day Leads Boise State Past Georgia Southern

8/31/2024 6:49:00 PM | Football

STATESBORO, Ga. - A Heisman-worthy performance from Ashton Jeanty propelled Boise State past Georgia Southern in a 56-45 victory in Paulson Stadium, Saturday.

The junior running back notched program records in touchdowns (six) and rushing yards (267), leading a rushing attack that bolstered a total of 371 yards and seven touchdowns. Maddux Madsen added a career-high 280 yards in the air as the Broncos (1-0) totaled 651 yards of offense.

The win marks the program's first season-opening victory since 2020 and the first season-opening road victory of the season since 2019.

Jeanty scored the first Bronco touchdown of the season in style, breaking a pair of tackles en route to a 77-yard score nearly five minutes into the contest. The star tailback found the end zone again with 2:50 left in the opening frame, scoring from 26 yards out to put the Broncos up 14-0.

The Eagles (0-1) responded in the second quarter with nine-straight points, but the Bronco offense went right back to work. Madsen connected with Cameron Camper for a 53-yard pass on the first play of the drive, followed by a 36-yard connection to Latrel Caples to put Boise State on the 1-yard line. Jeanty punched in his third touchdown of the day, giving the Broncos a 21-9 lead with 9:19 remaining in the half.

Jeanty found the end zone for the fourth time on a 5-yard rush with 2:33 left before the break, capping a 10-play, 71-yard drive. However Georgia Southern's Dalen Cobb caught an 18-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining to cut the Bronco lead to 28-16 entering the break.

The Eagles came out of the break scoring 14-straight points to take a 30-28 lead midway through the third frame. The Broncos didn't back down, with Jeanty scoring his fifth score of the day from a yard out to cap a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Madsen completed a pass to Camper on the two-point conversion, giving Boise State a 36-30 edge with 1:07 left in the third.

The Eagles responded with a touchdown with 13:30 remaining in the contest, nailing the extra point to take a 37-36 lead. Jeanty wasted no time, racing for his program-record sixth touchdown on a 75-yard score with 13:17 remaining. After a defensive stop, Sire Gaines exploded for a 38-yard touchdown to give Boise State a two-possession lead. Gaines would later catch a 17-yard pass on the ensuing Bronco drive as the team cruised to a 56-45 victory.
