Family of Dan Paul to Raise Blue Chaos Flag

BOISE, Idaho – Scott and Peggy Paul, the parents of former Bronco fullback Dan Paul, have been selected to raise the Blue Chaos flag prior to kickoff against Washington State on Saturday.

Paul, who played for the Broncos from 2008-12, passed away in July 2019 at the age of 30. He was known for perfectly embracing the blue-collar mentality that the program emphasizes, both through his relentless work ethic and his ability to connect with his teammates and coaches.

His legacy lives on through the Dan Paul Hammer, symbolizing the power of a collective force and representing the foundations of Boise State Football. Each week, the Dan Paul Hammer is awarded to a player who embodies the blue-collar spirit that Paul displayed, and the recipient leads the Broncos onto the field each game.

Scott and Peggy, along with their children Joey (who played for the Broncos for the 2009 season) and Margaret, spoke to the football team ahead of practice on Thursday. Following the speech, they were gifted with their very own Dan Paul Hammer.
"It's been very powerful to be back," Scott and Peggy said. "There's a lot that is still the same. This place embodies the champion of an underdog, which is what we felt with Dan. The spirit is the same and it's very wholesome."

Paul came to Boise State as a linebacker, but switched over to fullback early in his career. During his time with the Broncos, Paul caught 14 passes for 95 yards and totaled four touchdowns. His top performance came in 2009, when he hauled in three touchdowns and 22 yards in a 44-33 win over Nevada on Nov. 27. Paul finished his career with a 51-5 career record in the Blue and Orange and was a member of the 2010 Fiesta Bowl team.

"We've been supporting Boise State through some really big games, so it's a huge deal for us to be a little part of this one," Scott and Peggy said. "We're very humbled and honored. We've always considered this place to be a utopia. To come back without him is really hard but to see how his legacy is continued is really inspiring. We're really excited to raise this flag."

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
