BOISE, Idaho – Boise State could not slow down Utah State's offense on Saturday and despite a third-set victory, the Broncos dropped a four-set match to the Aggies (25-13, 25-20, 18-25, 25-9) in Bronco Gym.
In front of their largest home crowd since 2016, the Broncos (13-6, 5-3 Mountain West) were attempting to deal the Aggies (11-7, 8-0 Mountain West) their first conference loss of the season. However, Utah State out-hit (.336-.130) and out-killed (62-36) Boise State.
The loss snapped Boise State's five-match home winning streak.
Arianna Bilby led the Bronco attack with eight kills on 27 swings. The sixth-year also had three blocks, three digs and an ace.
Bridey O'Connor, Jazmine Smith and Eliza Sharp each had six kills.
Utah State had three players with 14 or more kills, led by Loryn Helgesen (17).
Utah State hit .303 in the opening set, helping it put away Boise State, which had a .034 attack percentage and six errors against six kills on 29 attacks. The Aggies opened up a 13-6 lead on an 8-1 run and never looked back as the Broncos could not make it any closer than seven points down the stretch.
In the second, the set was tied at 14-14, but the Aggies went on a 4-0 burst to force the Broncos to call their first timeout. Boise State went on to pull within two at 20-18, thanks to a Utah attack error followed by a Bre Mitchell ace. But the Aggies scored five of the final seven points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third, a 5-0 run by Boise State gave the Broncos their largest lead of the night at that point, 17-12. An O'Connor kill sparked the Broncos while she and Sharp paired up for a block as well during the run. Sharp's sixth kill of the match later made it 17-12.
The Broncos' block helped them finish out a 25-18 third set victory. Boise State had five blocks in the set, led by the quartet of J. Smith (3), Sharp (3), L. Smith (2) and O'Connor (2).
In the fourth, Utah State was efficient with a .636 attack percentage, totaling 16 kills and two errors on 22 attempts. Boise State had six kills and six errors on 26 attacks.

"I was really excited that the crowd showed up today. I think we got a lot of crossover fans after the football game, so that was really good. I thought our team was streaky today. I love that we were able to take the third set after being down two, but Utah State was the better team today. It gives us a lot of things that we have to work on if we want to be ready to match up with them later on and maybe the conference tournament, but I did think that our team battled. We didn't have everything, but we will regroup and be ready for next week."
