Phelps Nominated For Burlsworth Trophy

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State linebacker Boen Phelps was announced as a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on. Phelps, a redshirt sophomore, joined the Broncos as a walk-on safety in 2023 and earned a scholarship while switching to linebacker before the 2025 campaign. Phelps has appeared in all nine games for the Broncos, making four starts. He ranks fifth on the team in total tackles (36) and solo tackles (23) and is the only player on the team with an interception and a fumble recovery.
In his first career start, the Freeman HS product tallied a career-high seven tackles at Air Force. He followed that with six tackles and a 33-yard interception return touchdown against App State, earning Old Trapper Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career. He was the first Boise State player to receive the honor since JL Skinner in 2022. He notched five tackles at No. 21/21 Notre Dame and made another five, all solo, in a win over previously undefeated UNLV. A native of Spokane, Washington, Phelps leads Boise State in special teams snaps (141).
