Broncos Four-Game Winning Streak Snapped by San Diego State

2/15/2025 11:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball

SAN DIEGO — Boise State had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night, falling to San Diego State, 64-47, at Viejas Arena.

As a team, the Broncos (17-8, 9-5 Mountain West) shot 34 percent from the field and led for only eight minutes the game. San Diego State (17-6, 10-4 MW) collected its second consecutive victory and improved to 9-3 at home.

Tyson Degenhart notched his fourth double-double of the season, posting 17 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds. He surpassed 1,800 points for his career and became just the fifth player in program history to eclipse the milestone.

Alvaro Cardenas, who passed La'Shard Anderson (165, 2010-11) for the most assists by a Bronco in a single season, registered eight points and three dimes. Pearson Carmichael and Andrew Meadow each had seven points.

San Diego State was led by Nick Boyd, who poured in a game-high 24 points. He shot 10-of-14 from the floor and played nearly 36 minutes. Miles Byrd and Wayne McKinney III both had 10 points for the Aztecs.

To start Saturday's game, Andrew Meadow had the hot hand and scored the team's first seven points. Collectively, Boise State made four of its initial six shot attempts and led 9-4 upon reaching the first media timeout.

At the outset, offense was limited as the two squads combined for just 17 points in the opening nine minutes. The Broncos were stout defensively, limiting San Diego State to 30 percent shooting (3-for-10 FGs) while forcing six turnovers.

After Boise State grabbed a brief 18-17 lead with a little over five minutes left in the frame, the Aztecs capped the half by scoring the final 11 points. The Broncos missed seven consecutive shots to end the period and went scoreless across the final 5:15.

In total, Boise State managed to score 18 points and made just seven shots in the first half. The Broncos' point total served as a season low for the team in any half this season.

San Diego State tallied the first points of the second period on a three-pointer to extend its lead to 13. Moments later, the Aztecs collected back-to-back buckets in the paint, which forced a prompt Boise State timeout.

The Broncos trailed by as many as 23 points before finding their way back into the game. Boise State used an extended 12-0 spurt to slice its deficit to 11 with 8:40 to play.

Despite the effort and push, Boise State was unable to make it a single-digit game. The Aztecs led for over 30 minutes and comfortably collected their 17th win of the season.

With three days between games, the Broncos play New Mexico on Wednesday night at Extra Mile Arena. The game will be aired live on CBS Sports Network with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m. MT.
