BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Athletics announced that Erik Lindgren has been hired as the new Spirit Squad head coach for the Broncos which includes cheer, dance, and mascot programs.
A graduate of Boise State, Lindgren served for two years as a graduate assistant while completing the Master in Sports Leadership program. He spent the last year at the University of Colorado as the Spirit Squad's Assistant Director.
"The Boise State Spirit Squad plays an integral role in building and maintaining the vibrant atmosphere, celebrating the Bronco spirit, and uniting the community," said Josh Bender, Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing & Promotions. "Erik was instrumental in helping us enhance the gameday experience. We are thrilled to have him back on the sideline."Â
Known for their high-energy stunts, precision choreography, and unwavering enthusiasm, the Spirit Squad leads the charge in fostering school spirit. More than 60 students make up the squad, including cheerleaders, Mane Line dancers and mascot Buster Bronco.Â
The team supports Boise State men's and women's teams at more than 80 home and away games each year and during post-season competitions as well as attend over 100 events to promote Bronco spirit and represent Boise State Athletics – everything from business grand openings to retirement parties to birthday celebrations.
"It's an absolute honor to lead Boise State's Spirit Squad, a group that proudly represents the university as ambassadors," said Lindgren. "We play a vital role in elevating the gameday atmosphere and fan experience, and I'm thrilled by the department's clear commitment to supporting our continued growth as a premier collegiate spirit program."
As one of the only year-round sports at Boise State, when the team is not cheering on the Broncos, they compete nationally at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Cheerleading Championships in Orlando and the National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Dance Championships in Daytona. The Spirit Squad has won ten collegiate championships since 1993.
Most recently, the Mane Line dance team brought home two national championships from the 2025 National Dance Alliance competition. The team won first place in both jazz and hip hop in the top division, D1A, a first for the program.
Lindgren is certified as a cheer coach by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) and USA Cheer and Dance.
