Broncos Defeat Wolverines in Five to Win Utah Valley Invitational

OREM, Utah – Boise State volleyball went to the wire before holding off Utah Valley in five sets, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 22-25, 15-13. With the win, the Broncos won the Utah Valley Invitational championship, going undefeated (3-0) in Orem, Utah.
 
After dropping the first set, the Blue and Orange regrouped to claim the second and third. The Broncos used early runs to take control of both. They then maintained the lead for the wins to go up 2-1 in the match.
 
The Wolverines came back to win the fourth frame and forced the match to a fifth set.
 
After UVU scored the first point of the fifth, Boise State rallied to take the lead 2-1. The set was tied five more times, but the Broncos never trailed again as they held off UVU for the 15-13 win and a 3-2 match victory.

  • Layla Smith had nine kills and three blocks for 10.5 points.
  • Bre Mitchell led the team with 23 digs.
  • Lilli Etter recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs.

Notables

  • Eliza Sharp was the tournament MVP, while Kailyn Jager and Bre Mitchell were named to the all-tournament team.
  • This was the first victory for the Broncos at Utah Valley in six tries; Boise State cut UVU's series lead to 9-5.
  • Etter has recorded three straight double-doubles to start the season; she has 10 in her career.
  • Bre Mitchell recorded 20-plus digs for the second time this season; she now has 14 in her career.
