Boise State Rallies for Victory at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Boise State rallied from a set down to defeat the New Mexico Lobos 3-1 on the road in Albuquerque on Saturday afternoon. Six Broncos recorded between seven and 12 kills as the Blue and Orange relied on a balanced offense and solid defense to claim its third straight victory to improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West play, while UNM moved to 8-5 and 0-2.
 
Boise State rallied from five down to tie set one at 19, only to see the Lobos hold off the Broncos' rally for a 25-22 win.
 
Trailing by five at 16-11, Boise State rallied again in the second frame using an 8-2 run to take a 19-18 lead. The Broncos then closed out the come-from-behind win 25-22.
 
The third and fourth sets saw the Broncos take early leads – trailing only once at 1-0 in the third - then cruised to the wins. UNM made the third interesting make a late run to close the gap to three down the stretch, while the Blue and Orange stormed to an 11-point 25-14 win in the fourth to clinch the match.

  • Cotton helped put the fourth set out of reach with three back-to-back-to-back services late in the period…she had a team-high 24 assists.
  • Layla Smith had seven kills and a team-high nine blocks…she has recorded a combined 29 blocks in the last three matches (11,9,9) and has four contests this year with nine or more…she entered the day second in the league and 20th nationally for total blocks; she has 71 after today.
  • Eliza Sharp added seven kills and six blocks…she entered the match ranked third in the MW and 25th nationally for total blocks; after today's six, she has 65.
  • Sydney Dreves had eight kills, nine digs and three blocks, while Giselle Paedon added seven kills and two blocks.
  • Boise State recorded season highs for service aces with nine and blocks with 18…the blocks are tied for second in a four-set match during the rally scoring era (since 2001).
  • This is the first time since 2022 that the Broncos opened a season at 10-3.
