Buchanan and Kielser continue to demonstrate their deep commitment to community serviceÂ
BOISE, Idaho – Two Boise State student-athletes secured nominations, men's basketball player Javan Buchanan and indoor track & field student-athlete Julia Kiesler, for the Allstate NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) Good Works Winter Team, recognizing male and female student-athletes across all divisions and sports, who go above and beyond in their commitment to community service, academic achievement and athletic performance.
"At Boise State, we compete for championships and prepare our student-athletes for life," said Boise State Athletic Director, Jeramiah Dickey. "These student-athletes represent the very best of our program by investing their time, energy, and passion into serving their communities, proving that excellence extends far beyond competition."
Buchanan serves on the student-athlete committee for BroncoBOLD, a student-athlete-led mental health initiative, created by a group of Boise State student-athletes representing multiple sport programs. Committee members are enthusiastic about mental health advocacy work and dedicate themselves to championing a message of hope, help, and resiliency with fellow student-athletes and their community utilizing the platform of sport.Â
Last fall, in preparation for the annual citywide BroncoBOLD Chalk the Walk for Mental Health event to raise awareness and launch the National Suicide Prevention Week, Buchanan was instrumental in setting up stations with chalk kits to distribute to fans as they exited Albertsons Stadium following the Boise State football home opener. Buchanan has been open about setbacks and tools he utilizes to keep his mental health on track.
What began as gratitude for her own opportunities has grown into action, as Bronco indoor track & field student-athlete and BroncoBOLD ambassador Julia Kiesler led the second annual running shoe drive alongside BroncoLife.
Kiesler initiated the collection of over 200 pairs of shoes and enlisted the help of other student-athletes to prepare them for donation. Cleaning and shoe shining took place daily as athletes from other teams clocked in during their spare hours. This year, each pair of shoes was packaged with BroncoBOLD mental health resources and personal, encouraging notes written by student-athletes. In early December, Kiesler and BroncoLife staff delivered the shoes to participants at the county's Juvenile Clinical Program and the locally based Freedom Youth Foundation, which is committed to transforming the lives of children in foster care.
