The Broncos were ahead by five early on, but halfway through the period, San Jose State grabbed its first lead of the evening on a pair of free throws. The Spartans forged ahead by as many as eight, before Boise State put together a run.
Rattling off 11-straight points, the Broncos turned their eight-point deficit into a three-point lead with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the 20-minute session. Over the final seven-plus minutes, Boise State outscored the Spartans by six.
Trailing by one in the final seconds of the frame, Garland nailed a triple for San Jose State as time expired. Despite the Broncos' strong performance to end the half, San Jose's fifth long ball of the game gave them a 41-39 advantage at the intermission.
