The study is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2026
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Athletics has selected MMQ Group, one of the leading sports architecture, planning and financial strategy firms, to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study evaluating modernization opportunities for ExtraMile Arena and the east side of Albertsons Stadium.
The study will specifically look at the structure and fan amenities on the east side of Albertsons Stadium. The focus of the study will be on widening the concourse to improve circulation, expanding restrooms and concessions, providing spaces for guest services, and aligning improvements with broader campus planning initiatives. An overall focus will be placed on expanding the capacity of the lower bowl of the entire stadium.Â
At ExtraMile Arena, the analysis will center on a premium seating strategy, potential basketball practice and team space enhancements, and enlarged concourses to improve the fan experience while maintaining the arena's multi-use functionality. The focus of the study will be a reimagining of the main entry to the arena, added restroom and concession spaces, improvements to concourse and vertical circulation, and further improvements to enhance back of house spaces for concerts, NCAA championships, and other large events.
Chosen through a request for proposal process, MMQ Group will conduct the study to provide data-driven, implementation-ready recommendations that enhance revenue generation, improve the fan experience, and inform long-term capital planning. The study, which is supported by donated funds to Boise State Athletics, does not commit the university to construction but will provide validated market data, credible cost information, and a stronger foundation for future capital decisions.
"This is another step in What's Next 2.0, revealed last summer, for the two most important revenue and fan-experience assets at Boise State," said Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State Director of Athletics. "We appreciate MMQ Group in doing the study within our 12-week timeline so we can hit the ground running this summer as we engage with key stakeholders around planning, funding, and near- and long-term facilities work."
MMQ Group was founded by Algen Williams, a former Division I football player-turned-architect, and has a multidisciplinary approach focused on being a collaborative partner in planning, designing, and financing athletic facilities nationwide. It has worked on several projects in the college athletics industry, including the new on-campus stadium at South Florida, Canvas Stadium at Colorado State, the east side expansion at Missouri, and the James W. "Bill" Heavener Football Training Center at Florida.
"We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to partner with Boise State University on this exciting feasibility study," said Algen E. Williams Jr., President / CEO of Algen. "College athletics and live entertainment create experiences that bring communities together, and we're honored to help bring that vision to life. From vision to venue, we look forward to collaborating closely with the BSU team to create a dynamic destination and memorable fan experience that will serve students, athletes, alumni, and supporters for years to come."
The study will take a deeper dive and build upon the full venue assessment completed by AECOM in 2021 which identified 12 critical priorities for positioning the university's athletics department for long-term success and sustainability.
