Joining Boise State Athletics in July 2023, Matt Charles currently serves as director of operations for men's basketball. He is entering his fourth season with the program in 2026-27.

Serving as the logistics lead, Charles oversees the day-to-day operations of the basketball office, including travel and equipment arrangements. He also spearheads and coordinates all institutional camps and clinics hosted by the team.

In his three seasons at Boise State, Charles has been part of three 20-win seasons and has played a significant role in the team's success. Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, the Broncos have won exactly two thirds of its games, amassing a 68-34 (66.7%) record during his time in the Treasure Valley.

Charles' first season with Boise State in 2023-24 featured an NCAA Tournament appearance, with the Broncos taking on Colorado in the First Four. In 2024-25, the team participated in the inaugural College Basketball Crown, and followed that season with its fifth-consecutive 20-win campaign in 2025-26.

Taking on a more prominent coaching role last season, Charles was a key contributor in the team's rebounding success. The Broncos finished third in defensive rebound efficiency (KenPom), while ranking tied for 11th—and first in the Mountain West—in rebound margin.

Prior to Boise State, Charles spent six seasons at Oklahoma State from 2017-23. During his time in Stillwater, he performed various roles, including student manager (2017-20), head manager (2020-21) and graduate assistant (2021-23).

With Oklahoma State, Charles was part of three 20-win seasons in his six years. During that span, the team finished .500 or above five times.

The Cowboys' 2020-21 campaign was the most successful in Charles' tenure, as the team advanced to the Big 12 Championship game and garnered a four seed in the NCAAT while being ranked as high as No. 11 in the country in the AP poll. The 2021-22 team won 15 games without the possibility of a postseason, while the 2022-23 club earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NIT.

Charles also was part of Team USA's U16 support staff in 2021. He assisted with practices, film and various drills.

Via Oklahoma State and Boise State, Charles has been fortunate to work with a plethora of notable players who have gone on to have successful professional careers. He's worked extensively with Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons — No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft), Lindy Waters (San Antonio Spurs), Tyson Degenhart (G League), O'Mar Stanley (G League), Kalib Boone (G League), Kelyan Boone (G League), Alvaro Cardenas (overseas), Cameron McGriff (overseas), Avery Anderson III (overseas) and Cam Martin.

Charles earned his bachelor's of business administration in both sports management and marketing from Oklahoma State in 2021. Two years later, Charles obtained his master of science in leisure studies.
