Nicole Bird spent 15-years at the helm of the Boise State women's golf team.
In her final season, the Broncos captured the team championship at the Mountain Classic, marking the Broncos' first since winning the team title at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in 2018. Bird's squad also notched a second-place finish at the Valley Invitational, boasting four individuals in the top 10.
In 2019-20 the Broncos competed in nine events before the COVID-19Â pandemic halted their season. Junior Lexi Perry captured her first medalist honor at the 2019 Ptarmigan Ram Classic, making her the 12th Bronco women's golfer in school history to secure an individual title. Perry claimed her second top-10 finish of the season at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invite.
The Broncos strong 2018-19 season performances featured a victory at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic (Sept. 17-19, 2018) and seven top-five finishes. Senior Tara Finigan, in her lone season as a Bronco after transferring from Portland State, thrived under Bird's guidance, being named to the All-Mountain West Second Team in a campaign in which she captured the Ptarmigan Ram Classic medalist honor, posted four top-10 finishes and eight top-25s in nine starts, and set a Boise State single-season record with a scoring average of 73.55 over 29 rounds.
Boise State went on to finish sixth at the 2019 Mountain West Championships, led by Finigan's T-6 finish. Overall, the Broncos had four golfers finish in the top 25, with Valentine Lacaze and Lexi Perry each finishing tied for 22nd, and Nicole Suppelsa coming in tied for 25th.
The 2018-19 Broncos finished the season with a team season scoring average of 300.44, second-best in program history.
Since she took over in 2007-08, Bird has steadily orchestrated a turnaround that has included team titles, individual titles and multiple achievements from student-athletes – both on and off the course.
Eight of the top 10Â team season scoring averages have come from Bird-coached teams, including the 2014-15Â team that posted the program's top mark of 299.52.
Boise State has captured five tournament titles, as well as a runner-up finish at the 2014 Mountain West Championships, under Bird's tutelage, and seven Bronco golfers have captured seven medalist honors during her tenure, including four titles from Samantha Martin (2012-16). Six of Bird's Bronco golfers, most recently Finigan in 2019, have earned all-conference recognition by the WAC (through 2010-11) and Mountain West (2011-present).
In 2015, Genevieve Ling qualified for the NCAA Regionals as an individual, traveling to Raleigh, N.C., where she competed at the NCAA East Regional at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Ling was just the second Bronco golfer to be selected to an NCAA Regional, joining Acey Erlandson (2000).
Nine of the program's top-10 golfers in career per-round scoring average spent their Boise State careers under Bird's watch. Martin (75.02 from 2012-16) and Ling (75.59 from 2013-17) lead the way at 1-2, with current team members Perry (76.53 entering 2019-20) and Suppelsa (77.91 entering 2019-20) ranking fourth and 10th, respectively. Additionally, the top nine single-season scoring averages in program history have come from Bird's golfers.
The program has matched its on-course success in the classroom during Bird's tenure, racking up 30 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America Scholar honors since 2010. Bronco golfers matched the program record semester grade-point average of 3.68 in the Spring 2019 semester.
The academic success of the Bronco women's golf program was highlighted brightest when Océane Pelloille was selected as the student speaker at Boise State's 2017 Spring Commencement on The Blue at Albertsons Stadium.
Bird joined Boise State after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at TCU. Her duties as assistant coach included aiding in recruiting, organizing day-to-day operations of the program and helping lead team practices and workouts.
The Horned Frogs posted five-straight NCAA Championships appearances and registered five regular-season tournament victories during Bird's tenure. The 2007 team won the MW Championships, and the program produced three All-America honorees in Catherine Matranga, Valentine Derrey and Brooke Tull. She also helped coach nine NGCA All-America Scholars, one Academic All-American and nine all-conference honorees.
Bird served as the assistant tournament director for the 2004 Conference-USA Women's Golf Championships, as an intern with the American Junior Golf Association and as the AJGA's Manager of Tournament Administration.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Bird attended Western New Mexico University from 1996-98 before transferring to Centenary (1998-2000), where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in communication and professional writing.
She and husband Steve were married during the summer of 2011. They have one daughter, Kayden.
