BRONCO WRESTLERS DROP PAC-10 MATCH TO CAL STATE FULLERTON

            FULLERTON, Calif. The 25^th ranked Boise State University wrestling team dropped its first dual match of the season on Friday (Jan. 11) night when Cal State Fullerton handed the Broncos a 19-13 defeat.

            With the scored tied at 13 points each, the host Titans won the final two matches of the evening at the 197 pound and heavyweight divisions to post a six point win and improve their record to 6-5 overall, and 4-1 in Pac-10 duals.  Boise State is now 1-1 overall this season and 0-1 in league matches.

            Boise State lost the first four matches (125, 133, 141 and 149 pounds) and fell behind 13-0 as Cal State Fullerton recorded three decisions and one major decision.

The Broncos fought back winning the next four weight classes, but started the string of victories minus two team points as Boise State was charged with two misconduct calls during the 149-pound match.

            Tyler Sherfey posted the first Bronco win at 157 pounds when he handed Devein Velasquez a 3-0 defeat.  Kurt Swartz posted a 7-1 decision over Teddy Bristol at 165 pounds and Nate Lee pinned Todd Noel at the 2:05 mark of the 174 pound weight class to make the score 13-10.

            The 184-pound match was the official collegiate debut for true Bronco freshman Kirk Smith.  The first year wrestler from Meridian, Idaho, upset the Pac-10’s No. 1 ranked wrestler at 184-pounds with a 3-2 decision over Ian Murphy to tie the team score at 13. 

Smith had competing unattached in three open tournaments so far this season and now an overall record of 13-1. 

            The deciding matches were both won by decision for the Titans as John Drake recorded an 8-4 win over Matt Casperson at 197 pounds, and Wade Sauer posted a 5-2 decision over Nick Smith at heavyweight.

            Boise State now travels north to face Cal State Bakersfield in another Pac-10 dual on Saturday (Jan. 12) night.
