Broncos Pull To Within Four Strokes of Tournament Lead

The Broncos received solid performances throughout its lineup Tuesday, Apr. 29, as three
Troy Merritt continues to lead the field at the 2008 WAC Championships with a 6-under 138. He registered six birdies in round two en route to finishing with a 70 (-2). Merritt currently has a five stroke lead over second place as he attempts to win his fifth straight tournament and seventh of the season.
Matt Hastings is tied for second at the WAC Championships with a 1-under 143. He matched Merritt’s 70 (-2) in the second round to tie for the low round of the day.
John Baranco remained tied for ninth place at the tournament as he recorded his second straight 75 (+3). Baranco began the day by bogeying holes No. 2-4 but promptly responded to post par or birdie on the next 12 holes.
Robbie Richards and Kevin Tarango are tied for 38th place with a 17-over 161. Tarango earned the qualifying score for the Broncos in round two as he posted a 79 (+9) to edge out Richards’ 80 (+8).
The third round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships will begin Wednesday, Apr. 30, with tee times at 7:30 a.m.

“It was a tough day out there. As hard as the wind was blowing and the way the course was set up, to shoot under par was a pretty phenomenal round.”

I told them that it will be even tougher conditions tomorrow. You’re going to have to get out there with a blue collar mentality, keep you head in there and get it done.”
Senior
“I think I putted really well today. I hit the ball just fine off the tee. I hit some good iron shots, but they’d bounce off the green or they’d just miss the green. I only hit nine greens which you really can’t do out here. My putter pretty much saved me today.”
“I made some good putts a lot of good par savers. I rolled in some birdies. I had six birdies which was real nice. That made up for the four mistakes I made and the four bogeys.”
“The wind blew harder and a little more consistently (today). And, the pin placements were harder today.”
Senior Matt Hastings
“Everything came pretty easy. I hit the ball really well and left myself with a bunch of birdie putts. It was all going well. I missed four putts coming in that I was thinking I was going low. I was really happy taking that to start the day no question.”
“My first three birdies of the day I had about a 2-foot birdie putt (on #1). My next birdie was on #5 and I drove the green and had probably 20-25 feet for eagle and just putted to a couple of inches. My next one was a two-putt birdie. I made, maybe, a 12-footer on #10 and another 10-footer on the next hole. It wasn’t really my putter. I was hitting it really well.”
(On not feeling well): “I was actually throwing up the night before the tournament. I wasn’t expecting anything. I was happy to be out here feeling good today.”
