BOISE, Idaho - USA Today has released its 2009 preseason coaches' poll and Boise State University is ranked 16th, the highest the Broncos have ever been ranked to open a season.
The previous high preseason ranked came prior to the start of the 2005 season when Boise State was ranked 18th in the Associated Press media poll, and 19th in the coaches' poll.
Defending national champion the University of Florida is ranked No. 1 receiving 53 of the 59 first place votes from the head coaches who make up this year's voters. The Gators also received 1,466 points.
The University of Texas was picked second with 1,386 points and four first place votes followed by the University of Oklahoma with 1,358 points and one first place vote, USC with 1,321 points and the remaining first place vote. The University of Alabama rounds out the top five with 1,134 points.
Boise State is coming off a 12-1 record last season capturing its sixth Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship and its seventh straight postseason bowl appearance. The Broncos ended the 2008 season ranked 13th in the coaches' poll and 11th in the media poll.
The preseason ranking marks the ninth straight year Boise State has been ranked in the top 25 for at least one week of a football season. The streak started in 2002 with the Broncos being ranked three different weeks. Boise State was ranked five times in 2003, 10 times in 2004, once in 2005, 10 in 2006, seven in 2007 and 10 different weeks last year.
Boise State's all-time highest ranked in both polls came at the end of the 2006 season following its 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Broncos were ranked No. 5 by the AP and No. 6 by the coaches in the final 2006 rankings.
The Broncos open their 2009 season on September 3 (Thursday) against the University of Oregon at Bronco Stadium. The Ducks are ranked 14th in the coaches' preseason poll.
