Four Broncos Stay in Title Contention
LAS VEGAS-Boise State men's tennis student-athletes Damian Hume and James Meredith moved two steps closer to claiming a singles title, Friday, at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas. Andy Bettles and Scott Sears are still vying for the doubles championship.
Meredith, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, rolled through two more straight-set victories to reach the semifinals. Hume did the same, including a win against teammate Bettles in the round of 16. Hume and Meredith have been dominant through their first five matches. Hume, the tournament's No. 2 seed, is yet to lose a set and has dropped no more than three games in a set. Meredith has lost no more than four games in a set during his run. The Broncos are on opposite sides of the draw and would not meet until the finals, scheduled for Sunday.
Bettles and Sears cruised to an 8-3 victory against the 12th-seeded pairing of Conor Berg and Carl Ho from New Mexico. Hume and Meredith fell in doubles play, 9-8, in the round of 16 to a pair from Idaho.
Garrett Patton saw his tournament run come to an end in a round-of-16 loss to Jadon Phillips of New Mexico. Phillips, seeded fourth and ranked 81st nationally, battled back from Patton's 6-2 first-set win to take the last two sets 6-3, 6-1 and advance.
Bettles and Sears return to the court at 9 a.m. (PT), while singles action resumes at Noon (PT) from the Darling Tennis Center.
