Boise State Upsets San Diego State in Four

Harden and Gammel combined for 28 kills to lead Broncos.
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State volleyball team pulled off the upset Thursday night in Bronco Gym defeating the San Diego State Aztecs in four 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22 in a key Mountain West match. Boise State won the first, second and fourth sets by breaking open tight contests midway through each period using small runs to get the advantage over SDSU then held on the for wins. Liz Harden and Alyssa Gammel led the Broncos to the victory with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.
"I am really proud of the way we played tonight," said head coach Shawn Garus. "This is a big win for us, we've played well throughout the conference season and have come so close several times but came up short. San Diego State is a good team that returned nearly everyone from last year, for us to get this win over one of the top teams in the conference is big for our confidence. Everyone was solid for us tonight and played with a lot of energy in all four sets, now we need to carry it on to Saturday night against Nevada."
Boise State opened the match strong winning the first two sets to give itself a big advantage in the contest. In both sets the score was close midway through the period when the Broncos rolled off small four to five points runs to get the momentum and the wins.
Following the break after set two, the Aztecs reversed roles with Boise State using a small run to take control. Set three was tight early before San Diego State began to pull away with a 6-1 run to give itself an 16-10 lead. Boise State attempted to rally but was held off by the Aztecs who won the set 25-19.
Once again Boise State took control of a set midway through the period. The Broncos found themselves down 17-15 in the fourth set when they rallied with a 6-1 run to swing momentum their way for good up three at 21-18. Boise State did not waste its opportunity and put the match away with a 25-23 fourth set win, giving the Broncos a 3-1 match victory.
Harden recorded a team-high 15 kills to go with three digs and one block. Gammel followed with her 11th double-double of the year on 13 kills and 13 digs, along with four blocks. Taylor Murphey was third with nine kills while hitting .400 percent. Sarah Webster added seven kills and four blocks. Casey Rose led the attack with a team-best 29 assists with Sarah Baugh contributing 17. Kersti Whitney led the team in digs with 24.
Boise State hit .213 percent on the night and held San Diego State to .172 percent. The Broncos recorded 58 kills, 54 assists, two service aces, 72 digs and eight blocks. The Aztecs countered with 58 kills, 54 assists, three aces, 80 digs and 10.5 blocks. Raegan Shelton led SDSU with 16 kills and two blocks, followed by Chaiymin Steel with 15 kills and five blocks.
Tonight's win is the first victory for Boise State over the Aztecs in four tries as the Broncos improved to 10-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play. San Diego State one of the preseason favorites to win the MW title falls to 11-7 on the year and 3-3 in MW play.
Boise State will be back in action Saturday night when it host the University of Nevada (4-14, 1-4 MW) at 7:00 p.m. in Bronco Gym. Anyone who presents a Fresno State-Boise State football ticket from earlier in the day gets in free to the match.
