ST. HELENA, Calif. - Boise State's Nathan Sereke and Thomas Tenreiro participated in the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif., over the weekend of Sept. 20-22 against some of the top collegiate and UTSA junior talent in the nation. The duo gained valuable experience competing in this prestigious event that featured numerous rain delays throughout the first two days. They were each placed in separate four-man pools that consisted of three collegiate players and one of the top USTA juniors nationally, they also teamed up for doubles.
Sereke opened the competition winning his first match over USTA-Junior Lane Lechlesy 7-6 (3), 6-3. The senior from Stocklholm, Sweden, followed that up Saturday with a loss to Cal's Nikhil Jayashankar 6-3, 6-0. On the final day of the tournament on Sunday Sereke fell to Texas A&M's Junor Szabo 6-4, 6-4.
Tenreiro started the competition with a tough three-set loss to Cal's Andre Goransson. The sophomore from Miami, Fla., won the first set but could not hold off Goransson who came back to win the last two for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Saturday afternoon Tenreiro battled through another three-set match eventually falling to Sameer Kumar, a USTA junior, 3-6, 6-3, 16-14. The Bronco completed the singles portion of the tournament against Florida State's Benjamin Lock, losing 6-3, 7-6 (3).
The doubles portion of the tournament was scheduled for two matches, one on Friday and one Saturday, but saw the second day cancelled because of the rain. However, the Boise State duo did compete together on Friday defeating Cal's pair of Gregory Bayane and Nikhil Jayashankar easily by an 8-2 score.
