Spartans Complete Sweep Of Broncos

March 22, 2015

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Boise State's fortunes in California during conference play continued Sunday as San Jose State beat the Broncos, 9-0, in five innings to complete a three-game sweep at SJSU Field.

The Bronco slide has stretched to 10 games as Boise State fell to 8-25 overall and 0-3 to start conference play, while the defeat was also the team's 10th straight in Mountain West play in California.

Boise State returns to Dona Larsen Park for its second homestand this week, hosting San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Friday (March 27) at 4 p.m. MT.

Sunday, San Jose State (22-11, 3-0 MW) scored thrice in the opening frame for the third straight game to put the Broncos into an early hole. The Spartans loaded the bases with one out for Alyssa Martinez, who drove in Michelle Cox for the game's opening run with a base hit up the middle.

An out later, Bronco starter Rachel Rodriguez would walk Taylor Purdy and hit Daisy Conchas to force in two more runs. Rodriguez would only last through the first, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks to fall to 3-13 on the season.

Mackenzie McGill came on in the second but the Spartans went no easier on her, as Cox singled, stole second and came around on Jessica Madrid's RBI single. After a walk and another hit batter loaded the bases, McGill settled down and got the next three outs, although the first was a sacrifice fly by Martinez that scored Madrid to make it 5-0.

Martinez would knock in San Jose State's final two runs in a four-run third to cap her 2-for-2, four-RBI day. Madrid went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Cox also had two hits.

The Bronco bats struggled again Sunday to mount a threat to the Spartans, managing only three hits for the third day in a row. Freshman Sara Ketelsleger reached base in both of her plate appearances, getting a walk and a single while fellow rookies Makenzie Sullivan and Shaelee Pearson accounted for the team's other two hits.

Ketelsleger's and Pearson's hits came in the Bronco fifth, when the team put runners on second and third with one out. But Spartan starter Allison Lang got Kayla Clausen and Jordan Kreiger to ground out to end the game.

Lang improved to 6-4 after walking just one along with the three hits over five innings.
