Broncos Fourth Heading Into Final Round

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Freshman Brian Humphreys opened Friday's second round at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational with four birdies over his first six holes, as his 68 on a rainy day on the par-71 Stockton Country Club course moved him up to a tie for third place on the individual leaderboard and paced Boise State's even-par day as a team.
The Broncos dropped a spot in the team standings to fourth after two-straight days at even par (284-284), but are just two strokes behind second-place Seattle University (-2), one behind third-place Sacramento State (-1) and nine behind the leader, BYU (-9).
"The guys had another solid day. We threw out a 73 which is good to see, and I like the way we are competing," said Boise State head coach Dan Potter.
Humphreys (-4) enters Saturday's final round just two strokes behind co-leaders Aaron Beverly of Sacramento State and Rhett Rasmussen of BYU, who each shot a 69 Friday to finish the day six-under for the tournament.
Kyle Mitsunaga recovered from a slow start, shooting two-under over the back nine to finish the day at 73 (+2) and stay in the top 20. Mitsunaga sits tied for 16th at 1-over heading into the final round.
Jacob Byers rebounded well from a Thursday's 79, shooting an even-par 71 Friday. The junior from Salt Lake City birdied No. 16 and finished with consecutive pars Friday to get to even par.
Freshman Mason Schulze bogeyed No. 5 and recorded 17 pars Friday to finish the round with a 72, leaving him tied for 21st on the individual leaderboard at 2-over, a stroke behind Mitsunaga. Junior Donny Hopoi shot a 73 and sits a stroke behind Schulze overall at 3-over.
