Boise State Rolls in Season Opener

BOISE, Idaho - Shalen Shaw just missed her first double-double of the season leading Boise State with 17 points and nine rebounds as the Broncos rolled past Southern Oregon 89-45 in the season opener Sunday afternoon at Taco Bell Arena. Boise State used a 22-5 run in the first quarter to take control and never looked back in its 44 point victory over the Raiders.
"It was exciting to get everyone in and give everyone a chance to play," said head coach Gordy Presnell. "Obvisously our schedule is going to pick up a bit. I really appreciate them (SOU) coming over to play us, they are a really good team and were coming in off games Friday and Saturday, so they were fatigued. I am excited about our team, but we have somethings we need to clean up such as our turnovers. But I believe we can get this thing moving forward. I thought Brooke (Pahukoa) and Yaiza (Rodriguez) played really good basketball, and Shay (Shaw) was outstanding."
Shaw led Boise State by shooting 57 percent from the floor hitting 8-of-14 shots with one 3-pointer. In addition to scoring a team-high 17 points she grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, six of those were offensive boards which resulted in nine Bronco second chance points.
Freshman Riley Lupfer followed Shaw with 13 points in her Boise State debut making 5-of-9 field goals with one 3-pointer to go with four rebounds in 22 minutes.
"I think Riley Lupfer is a real talent," Presnell said. "She has a knack for scoring the ball and did that today and in our exhibition as well."
In all, four Broncos reached double-digit points with Joyce Harrell tallying 11 going 5-of-6 from the floor. The sophomore from Seattle, Wash., added a career-high eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in 14 minutes of action.
Leonie Edringer came in off the bench as did Harrell, the sophomore from Germany scored a team-high six points in the second quarter and finished with 10 in the contest. Edringer added three rebounds and one block in the winning effort.
Boise State seized control of the game during the opening 10 minutes using a 22-5 run to close the first period. The Broncos shot 50 percent in the quarter going 11-22 from the floor. Shaw and Marijke Vanderschaaf combined for 14 points, led by Shaw's eight.
The second quarter saw Boise State continue to dominate out scoring the Raiders 17-7 as the Broncos led by 29 at halftime 46-17.
The third quarter saw the Broncos continue shooting the ball well as they hit 55 percent (11-20) from the floor. Shaw tallied nine of her points in the period making 4-of-5 field goals. The Blue and Orange won the third outscoring the Raiders 25-17 to lead by 37, 71-34, heading into the fourth.
Marta Hermida was the only starter that saw action in the final quarter as Boise State went to its younger players off the bench. Lupfer led the Broncos scoring seven points in the period, followed by Edringer and Harrell with four each.
Eleven of the 12 Broncos who played scored against the Raiders and 11 played 10 minutes or more, the 12th played nine.
Yaiza Rodriguez, who did not play in the fourth quarter, started at the point for the Broncos and dished out five assists to go with her four points and one steal.
Braydey Hodgins, a freshman from Pasco, Wash., was the only Bronco not to score, but she made up for that by dishing out five assists to tie Rodriguez for the team-high. Hodgins finished with three rebounds and one steal in 21 minutes of action.
Brooke Pahukoa scored seven points and had three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 17 minutes. Brooke Wheeler, a transfer from Snow College, matched Pahukoa's point total and added five rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes.
Marijke Vanderschaaf added six points and six rebounds in 12 minutes. Brittney Pahukoa nailed two 3-pointers in the second half to tally six points as well. Pahukoa also recorded two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 14 minutes of action.
Emerald Toth joined Lupfer, Hodgins and Wheeler as the Broncos who saw their first action in the blue and orange against Southern Oregon. The freshman from Bozeman, Mont., chipped in with four points, six rebounds and one steal in 13 minutes.
Boise State shot 49.3 percent (37-75) as a team from the floor, hit 38.5 percent (5-13) from beyond the arc and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the charity stripe. The Broncos out rebounded the Raiders 58-to-30 and held a 25-to-13 advantage in offensive rebounds which resulted in Boise State out scoring SOU 26-to-4 in second chance points.
Southern Oregon, playing in its third game in three days, countered by shooting 25.4 percent (16-63) from the floor, 16.7 percent (5-30) from the arc and 80 percent (8-10) from the free-throw line. No Raiders reached double-figure points, but Autumn Durand led with nine.
Next up for the Broncos is Portland State Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena preceding the volleyball team's battle for first place in the Mountain West against Colorado State at 7:30 p.m. in Bronco Gym.
