Boise State Battles Hard to Get Sweep Over Nevada

BOISE, Idaho - Sabryn Roberts and Kiley Lewis combined for 26 kills to lead Boise State in a hard fought three-set match as the Broncos defeated Nevada 26-24, 27-25, 25-18 Thursday night in Bronco Gym. The first two sets were close throughout with a combined 34 ties and 15 lead changes before the Broncos claimed both sets in extra points.Â
Up 11-10 in the third set, Boise State rolled off a 6-1 run to take control up 17-11. Nevada attempted to rally pulling within two at 18-16, but never managed to take the lead. Roberts, Morgan Hughes and Lewis combined for five points in the final 7-2 run to put the match away. Both Roberts and Lewis had six kills in the final period.
"I thought it was a hard fought victory, Nevada gave us all we could handle in the first two sets," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "We were able to get a little separation in the third set. I'm proud of the resilience our team has shown, especially since we started another line up tonight. It was a big win for us."
Roberts led the Broncos with a team-high 15 kills while hitting a team-best 38.2 percent with seven digs and two blocks. Lewis followed hitting 27.6 percent for 11 kills to go with seven digs and three blocks.Â
"Sabryn (Roberts) is important to this team, no matter what line up we're going with or who's injured, she is constant night in and night out.," Garus said. "She is carrying a really big load for this team, serving tough, blocking and has the great arm swing on the outside. We're really proud of everything she is doing to keep the team moving forward."
Morgan Hughes added seven kills — including the match clincher — seven digs and a team-high (tied) four blocks. Jessica Donahue was next with six kills and tied for the team-high in blocks with four. Carly Moreno chipped in four kills and three blocks.Â
Danielle Boss — splitting time at setter and outside hitter — tallied a double-double on 17 assists and team-high 13 digs. Cassedi Simon playing primarily at setter when she was in dished out a team-high 22 assists.Â
Boise State as a team finished the night hitting 23.8 percent for 45 kills on 43 assists with one service ace, 51 digs and eight blocks. Nevada was held to 16 percent hitting for 41 kills on 40 assists with two service aces, 57 digs and one block.
The win improved Boise State to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in Mountain West play. The Broncos will close out a three-match homestand on Saturday when the San Jose State Spartans come to town for a 2 p.m. encounter in Bronco Gym.
