BOISE, Idaho – Boise State took care of business Monday night at Taco Bell Arena, taking down Vanguard (Calif.), 89-63, in what was an exhibition game for both teams. The Broncos had five players finish in double figures with Zach Haney leading the way thanks to 21 points.
RJ Williams (16 points), Malek Harwell (12 points), Alex Hobbs (12 points) and Derrick Alston (11 points) all tallied double-digit points as the Broncos will now look ahead and prepare for their season opener set for Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. against Idaho State back at Taco Bell Arena.
"It was a really good exhibition game," head coach Leon Rice said afterwards. "We had some guys play different positions and I told them that this stuff happens throughout the year... What a great way to learn, and that's what good teams figure out how to do. I was proud of the way the guys did that."
The Blue and Orange were able to surge ahead late in the second half after holding a 10-15 point lead for the majority of the game. Leading by nine points (66-57) with 7:22 to play, Boise State rattled off a 14-2 run over the next four minutes of play to put the game out of reach at the final media timeout (80-59).
13 Broncos played Monday night with 11 finding the scoring column. Williams along with freshmen Max Rice, Riley Abercrombie, Jaycson Bereal, Mikey Frazier and Bing Huang all logged minutes in their first unofficial appearance wearing the Boise State uniform.
Haney, Alston and Williams grabbed eight rebounds each as the Broncos ended up with a 39-17 (+22) advantage on the glass against the Lions.
Vanguard knocked down nine threes over the course of the game as Brandon Brothers led the way with 16 points, but the visitors could never get within striking distance of the Blue and Orange.
"It was a good learning experience overall," Zach Haney said. They came out shooting threes, so we tried to take that away like we did in the second half. First game in front of the fans, so it was good for us.
Boise State's home opener against Idaho State (Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.) at Taco Bell Arena will be the second game of a doubleheader for Bronco basketball, as the women's team will play Southern Oregon at 4:30 p.m.
