BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Idaho State's Chidi Udengwu hit two free throws as time expired, as Boise State couldn't hold on to an 18-point second half lead, eventually falling to the Bengals, 72-70.
Idaho State trailed by 14 points at intermission and Boise State extended its advantage to as many as 18 points after Zach Haney scored at the basket to make it 50-32 with 16:45 remaining. Brandon Boyd hit a 3 with 12:17 left to get the Bengals within single digits and Jared Stutzman's 3 with 8:28 remaining cut it to five, 61-56.
The Broncos held on to the lead until Udengwu drew a foul from David Wacker with just under a minute left, hitting the second of two free throws to tie. Alex Hobbs missed a jumper for the lead and Wacker missed two free throws in the final minute before again fouling Udengwu with no time left on the clock.
RJ Williams tallied a team-high 15 points in his Bronco debut. Fellow newcomer Pat Dembley played well in his first game wearing the Blue and Orange, as well, scoring 13 points to go with a team-high four assists.
Derrick Alston had a career day, picking up career highs in minutes (35), points (9) and rebounds (7). Boise State had a 28-14 advantage in points in the paint, but Idaho State was able to go 12-of-25 from behind the arc to negate the Broncos' inside advantage.
The 5,001 fans in attendance at Taco Bell Arena Saturday night marked the second-most fans at a home opener in the Leon Rice era, coming up just short of No. 1 mark (5,662 – Nov. 8, 2013 | UT Arlington).
Boise State (0-1) will welcome Jackson State (0-2) next Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. as the women's and men's teams will host another doubleheader at Taco Bell Arena.
