Second Half Lead Slips Away for Boise State

PHOENIX (AP) — Carlos Johnson scored 14 points to lead five Grand Canyon players in double figures and the Antelopes edged Boise State 69-67 on Saturday night.
Grand Canyon (5-3) avenged last season's double-overtime loss at Boise State (2-5).
Boise State led for the majority of the second half after going into halftime with a 36-35 lead. The Broncos started the second well, kicking off the half with a 10-0 run to secure their largest lead of the game (46-35) at the 15:12 mark.
Eventually, the game was tied 63-63 with 1:38 to play. Oscar Frayer made a free throw, Alessandro Lever a layup, and Damari Milstead two free throws and Grand Canyon led 68-65 with 11 seconds to play. Malek Harwell's two free throws pulled the Broncos to 68-67.
Drechsel split a pair of free throws with four seconds left and Boise State couldn't get a shot off before time expired.
RJ Williams scored 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting to lead Boise State. Marcus Dickinson and Pat Dembley each added 11 points.
Williams also picked up a season-high five steals. The five steals in a game are the most for a Bronco player since Mikey Thompson also recorded five against New Mexico (Jan. 30, 2016).
The Broncos shot another high percentage from the field, finishing the night 27-of-50 (54%). The team has shot over 50 percent in three games this season.
Boise State will return home and host Central Washington at Taco Bell Arena next Saturday, Dec. 8 for a 2 p.m. tip.
