Game Notes
THE GAME: Boise State (2-5) will look to get back on track at home, Saturday, Dec. 8, when it welcomes Central Washington (4-4) to Taco Bell Arena for a 2 p.m. tip.
WATCH: The game will stream on the Mountain West Network.
RADIO: Bob Behler will handle play-by-play duties while Abe Jackson will provide commentary. The game will air on 670 AM KBOI or on the TuneIn app.
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State almost picked up a big road win last Saturday at Grand Canyon, but the Lopes were able to make enough plays down the stretch to hold off the Broncos in Phoenix, 69-67.
The Blue and Orange led for the majority of the second half, eventually building an 11-point lead (46-35) at the 15:12 mark. Boise State had a chance to tie or win the game with five seconds to play, but was unable to get off a shot after dribbling the length of the court.
RJ Williams was exceptional against the Lopes, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds and a season-high five steals. Pat Dembley and Marcus Dickinson also both finished in double figures, chipping in 11 points each.
ABOUT CENTRAL WASHINGTON: The NCAA Division II Wildcats are 4-4 this season, averaging an impressive 89.1 points per game. CWU has five players averaging double figures: Jackson Price (10.8 ppg), Malik Montoya (11.3 ppg), Gamaun Boykin (12.3 ppg), Malcolm Cola (12.4 ppg) and Jeryn Lucas (13.5 ppg).
Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the two teams.
FIVE-STEAL NIGHT: Williams picked up a season-high five steals against Grand Canyon (Dec. 1). The five steals in a game are the most for a Bronco player since Mikey Thompson also recorded five against New Mexico (Jan. 30, 2016) almost three years ago.
The steals were momentum plays, as well, with three of the five resulting in breakaway dunks for the 6-foot 7-inch Williams.
WILLIAMS' UNIQUE GAME: Williams has not only been the Broncos' top scorer at 16.8 ppg, but he also has been extremely efficient from the field, shooting 61.4 percent. He is one of just 15 players in NCAA Division I who is averaging 16 or more points on 60 percent or better shooting.
Furthermore, the junior guard is one of just six players from the aforementioned 15 who are 6 feet 7 inches or shorter. His ability to get to and finish at the basket for his size and position has been notable through seven games.
HIGH PERCENTAGE FOR THE TEAM, TOO: Boise State's team field goal percentage of 48.5 is currently No. 4 in the Mountain West. The team has already recorded three games this season shooting 50 percent or higher: vs. Creighton (51.6%), vs. St. Bonaventure (58.1%) and at Grand Canyon (54.0%).
AWAY FROM THE BELL: Saturday's game against Central Washington will be the team's third home game of the season. Boise State is the only Mountain West team to have played just two home games in its first seven overall games of the season. Coming off trips to the Cayman Islands, Iowa and Arizona, Boise State recently concluded a five-game road trip that totaled 9,038 miles (as the crow flies) traveled in the past couple weeks.
TOUGH OPPONENTS: Boise State's five games away from Taco Bell Arena have been against quality opponents, as the five teams combine for an average KenPom ranking of 130.6. Two of the five teams (Creighton and St. Bonaventure) were NCAA Tournament, 20-win teams last season.
CLOSE GAMES: Three of the Broncos' five losses have been decided by one possession with a losing margin of three or fewer points. Idaho State (72-70), Illinois State (73-70) and most recently Grand Canyon (69-67) have all been games that could have gone the Broncos' way.
