BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State baseball program has hired its first assistant coach, bringing Hilton Richardson back to Boise, head coach Gary Van Tol announced Monday. Richardson had been working in the Philadelphia Phillies organization since 2014, and also spent time as a member of the Bronco football team during the 2011-12 seasons.
"Hilton represents everything Boise State is all about and what it means to be a Bronco," Van Tol said. "He brings to the table an unselfish work ethic with humility, integrity and professionalism. The road he has traveled will make an immediate impact on our program and the student-athletes he comes in contact with.Â
"I want to thank the Philadelphia Phillies for supporting Hilton's opportunity to come back to Boise and for helping him prepare for this special journey. The Broncos just got better today!"
Richardson, a 2014 graduate of Boise State with a degree in criminal justice, was a seventh-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in the 2007 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. Originally from Kirkland, Wash. (Lake Washington High School), Richardson played in 323 games over the course of five seasons for minor league affiliates of the Royals and Atlanta Braves.
Following the conclusion of his professional baseball career, Richardson walked on to the Boise State football team, despite having never played the sport. He was part of the team for two seasons before leaving to focus on finishing his degree and getting back into baseball.
"I fell in love with Boise when I first showed up in 2011 to be on The Blue, so to be back means the world to me," Richardson said. "Boise is a very special place and I'm excited to build a future here. It still hasn't quite hit me yet, but I'm ready to start something special and impact lives in a positive way. I'm going to exhaust every last effort I can to make sure our guys are always in the best possible position to be successful."
Upon graduation, Richardson joined the Phillies, initially as a player for Spring Training, and ultimately became the team's northwest area scouting supervisor.
The Boise State baseball program is slated to return to the diamond for the 2020 season, the Broncos' first since 1980.
