BOISE, Idaho – John Boushelle, a graduate transfer from McNeese State, has joined the Boise State baseball program, head coach Gary Van Tol announced, Friday.

Boushelle, a 20th round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, is a perfect match for Van Tol and the Broncos.

Like other NCAA spring sports student-athletes, Boushelle's 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19. He entered the transfer portal looking for an opportunity to finish his collegiate career and pursue a master's degree. Van Tol was targeting a graduate transfer to complete his 2021 pitching staff.

"The stars lined up, all the boxes checked and the final piece of the puzzle was a perfect fit for John and the Broncos," expressed Van Tol. "We wanted an older guy that has been through the grind at the Division I level in a successful program. John is someone who wants to be a Bronco, with plus make-up, is committed to academics and wants to make a positive impact in a young clubhouse," added Van Tol.

Van Tol added, "It was an unconventional recruiting process because of the current pandemic. John and I had to rely on old fashioned research, cross-checking, a lot of time on the phone and looking at video before we knew it was the right match. We are fired up to have John join our Bronco family. Even though we only have one year to work with him, he has a chance to make a huge impact on a young pitching staff. He can be that older guy in the back end of our bullpen or compete as a weekend starter. His skill set is very projectable. A lot of professional scouts will want to come see him pitch."

Boushelle was drafted by the Dodgers after his senior season at Fayetteville High School in Fayetteville, Ark. Instead of starting his professional career, he competed at Kansas State during his freshman year. He spent his sophomore season at Cowley College and helped the Tigers finish third at the 2017 NJCAA World Series.

Boushelle transferred to McNeese State where he was a member of an NCAA regional team in 2019. In three appearances this season, he gave up one hit with six strikeouts in three innings pitched.
