BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State baseball program has added another key piece to its staff, as Brock Huntzinger has been named the Broncos' pitching coach, head coach Gary Van Tol announced Wednesday.
"Having our pitching coach in place is exciting for everyone, especially the pitchers who will be on campus this fall and the underclassmen who have committed to Boise State," Van Tol said. "It has been a long process but well worth the wait. Brock comes highly recommended from some great baseball people at the professional and collegiate levels. His journey and experience will make an immediate impact in the development of our pitching staff. He's lived the dream and now he's ready to help dreams come true. We welcome Brock, his wife Cait and daughters, Hudson and Parker, to our Bronco family."
Huntzinger, originally from Pendleton, Ind., spent 10 seasons in professional baseball before joining the college ranks as an undergraduate assistant with both Indiana and Arizona State.
"Since the conclusion of my professional career, I knew I wanted to be involved in baseball at the collegiate level," Huntzinger said. "Building young men and helping them reach their goals – both professionally and academically – is something I am passionate about. To be able to do it at Boise State, with Coach Van Tol, and start this thing from the ground up, is an opportunity that I couldn't be more excited about."
Huntzinger was initially drafted out of Pendleton Heights High School in the third round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox, spending seven seasons with the club and reaching Triple-A Pawtucket. A right-handed pitcher, Huntzinger was named an All-Star in both the New York-Penn League (2008) and the Carolina League (2010).
Over his next three seasons Huntzinger spent time with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics. He earned the Norfolk Tide ERA Award in 2014, given to the reliever with the lowest earned run average on the staff.
Huntzinger joins a staff that already includes Van Tol and Hilton Richardson, who will serve as the Broncos' hitting coach. The Boise State baseball program is slated to return to the diamond for the 2020 season, the Broncos' first since 1980.
