SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Boise State (1-1) came out strong in the first half, but UC Santa Barbara (3-0) withstood the initial Bronco attack and rallied back in a big way to claim the 3-0 win. The loss was the first of the season for the Blue and Orange, as the Gauchos scored in the 31st, 47th and 65th minutes.
The Broncos started the game off phenomenally, as McKennna Kynett, Raimee Sherle and the rest of the forwards successfully pressed the UCSB back line and created turnovers, resulting in three quality chances in the first five minutes of the game.
With none of the chances coming to fruition, the first 25 minutes quickly shifted into an up-and-down game that saw both sides generate some good offense. The Gauchos eventually struck first when Shaelan Murison curled in a well-struck ball from the left flank to give the home team the 1-0 lead in the 31st.
The Broncos quickly shored up their defense for the remainder of the half, but UCSB didn't take long to double its lead in the second as a Boise State defensive miscue led to a six-yard shot for Christine Maurer, who went above the outstretched the arms of Tara Fisher to make it a 2-0 game.
The Gauchos' Katherine Sheehy converted a header in the 65th for the final goal of the game.
Boise State emptied its bench throughout the final 25 minutes and saw 22 total players gain valuable game experience.
The Broncos will now regroup and prepare to play Cal Poly, Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. MT.
