Roberts leads with 14 kills as Broncos extend season opening win streak to four.
POCATELLO, Idaho (9/1/2018) - Boise State volleyball rolled past the UC Riverside Highlanders to record a sweep 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 in the first of two contests on Saturday at the Idaho State Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho. Once again Boise State received contributions from numerous individuals led by senior outside hitter Sabryn Roberts who had a team-high 14 kills, while Kiley Lewis added 10 kills in the victory. The Broncos will now take their four-match win streak and undefeated record into his evening's night cap against instate-rival Idaho State at 7 p.m. (MT).
"I thought we had a really solid defensive effort this morning against UC Riverside holding them to a zero percent hitting percentage as a team," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "We played well at the net today with 14 blocks against UCR. I thought our middle blockers did a good job on the block with Morgan (Hughes) and Jessica (Donahue) leading the way with seven each, we had six players get at least one block in the match. But we still have things to work on, now we have to rest this afternoon and get ready for a big match tonight against Idaho State."
UC Riverside opened the match by taking an early lead in set one, only to see Boise State surge back quickly on a 4-0 run to go up 5-2. The Broncos never trailed again in the period as they took it by seven points 25-18.
The next two sets proved to be a little closer but UC Riverside was unable to get the momentum from the Blue and Orange who trailed only six more times combined and never past the midway point of a set. In the second frame, Boise State was down 15-13 when it rolled off a 7-2 run to take the lead, eventually taking a 25-21 win.
The third set was similar to the second, the Broncos trailed early at 10-9 when they regrouped with a 4-0 run to take the advantage. Boise State never trailed again but was tied twice more with the last coming at 14-14. Tied with UCR, the Blue and Orange turned in another 4-0 run - which included two kills by Roberts - to take the lead for good. The Broncos then put it in cruise control to win the set 25-22. Freshman Jessie Brigham clinched the victory with a service ace to hand Boise State its fourth-consecutive victory to open the season.
Neither team hit the ball particularly well with Boise State recording a 16.4 percent hitting percentage (41-21-122), while holding UCR to zero percent (24-24-115), the best defensive performance of the year by the Broncos. UC Riverside was held to a negative hitting percentage in both the first and third sets, and no Highlander recorded more than seven kills in the contest.
The defensive effort was helped by a season-high 14 blocks to go with 56 digs against UC Riverside. Freshman middle blocker Jessica Donahue continues to impress at the net recording her fourth-consecutive match with a team-high for blocks with seven today versus the Highlanders. In addition, Donahue added six kills and a dig to her match totals against UCR. She also had a hand in clinching the first two sets winning the second with a block assist along with Shae Duffy, then closing out the second with a kill for the decisive point.
Morgan Hughes, a senior middle blocker, was steady once again for the Blue and Orange tying Donahue for the team-lead on blocks with seven, one was a solo. She also tallied eight kills, two service aces - giving her seven in the first two matches at the tournament - and seven digs to finish up with 14 total points against UCR.
Roberts was the offensive leader for the Broncos hitting a team-best 30.6 percent for 14 kills to go with one assist, nine digs and three blocks to finish with a team-high 15.5 points.
Kiley Lewis recorded her second straight match in double-digit kills with 10 this morning against UCR, in addition to one dig and three blocks.
Freshman Shae Duffy was another force at the net for the Broncos recording five blocks to go with one kill and a dig.
Junior Cassedi Simon started at setter where she dished out a season-high 35 assists with one kill, one service ace, nine digs and two blocks. Junior Janell Walley playing only in the back row against UCR tallied a team-high 16 digs.
Boise State is now 4-0 on the year, the longest win streak to open a season since 2004. UC Riverside losing for only the second time this year moved to 4-2.
