Boise, Idaho – Boise State gymnastics co-head coaches Tina Bird and Neil Resnick announced Tuesday that former standout Sandra Collantes will be joining their staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
Â
"We are so happy to have Sandra helping the team this year," Bird said. "She brings a certain fire to the gym that we really need."
Â
From 2014-18, Collantes participated in all four events for the Broncos and was a four-year letterwinner. She earned first-team all-Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference honors three years in a row on floor and bars. She finished her senior season tied for fourth in the all-around competition at the NCAA Regional Championship in Columbus, Ohio, with a score of 39.250.
Â
Collantes tallied 10 wins on floor during her career with the Broncos and four all-around victories. At the 2016 MRGC championships, she recorded the third-highest all-around score in conference history, a performance that also placed her fourth in the nation in the all-around. She also garnered a beam and uneven bars title during her time at Boise State.
Â
Collantes, who has degrees in both psychology and Spanish, was an integral part of the gymnastics team's number one grade-point average in the NCAA, recording a 3.81 for the 2017-18 academic year. She was also named a WCGA Scholastic All-American all four years of her career, which requires student-athletes to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA for the entire academic year.
Â
Before attending Boise State, Collantes was part of many national and international competitions. She represented her home country, Peru, at the 2013 South American Championships, where she won gold in the all-around competition, the first Peruvian to do so.
Â
Collantes also competed for Excalibur Gymnastics, where she won the 2011 Junior Olympic National Championship on vault and was a runner-up on floor. She also won the level 10 Virginia state titles on floor and all-around
Â
Collantes hails from Lima, Peru, but relocated to Virginia Beach, Va., by herself in order to further her career in gymnastics. She came to Boise in 2014 to compete for the Broncos and study at Boise State.
Â
"I can't wait to share my passion with the team because I competed with them" she said. "I know them all really well and I want to see them grow both as athletes and students."
