LAST TIME OUT: Derrick Alston had a career-high 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting and Boise State led by double digits throughout the second half in an 88-64 win over San Diego State on Saturday night. Alex Hobbs added 18 points for the Broncos.
Alston's 30 points was the first 30-point game of the season for any Boise State player. He recorded career highs in made field goals (9), field goal attempts (14), made free throws (10) and free throw attempts (12) in 29 minutes of play.
Boise State led by 23 late in the first half and went into the break with a 46-25 lead. San Diego State opened the second half with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to eleven but that was as close as the Aztecs would get.
The Blue and Orange's 24-point victory gives the team its largest margin of victory over San Diego State in program history. The 88 points was also a season high for the Broncos, who ended the game shooting 56.9 percent from the field (29-of-51), their second-highest field goal percentage in a game this season.
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE: The Spartans are off to an 0-2 start in conference play after dropping games to Fresno State (73-53) and No. 10/11 Nevada (92-53). Junior post Michael Steadman leads the team in both scoring (13.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.4 rpg), while four other SJSU players are averaging eight or more points.
THE SERIES: The Broncos own a 30-3 advantage in the all-time series against San Jose State, including a 12-3 record on the road. Boise State has won its last three matchups with the Spartans after only playing each other once last season (a 94-71 Bronco win at Taco Bell Arena (Jan. 24, 2018)).
A WIN WOULD…: Give the Broncos three-straight victories, which would be their longest winning streak of the season. A win would also push Boise State to 3-0 in conference play, which would make it four-straight seasons of beginning the Mountain West season with three victories.
COMING OFF THE BYE: Since joining the Mountain West in the 2011-12 season, Boise State is 9-4 when coming off a bye. The MW moved to a two-bye schedule in 2012-13, and the Broncos have recorded a 4-2 record on the heels of its first bye since then.
ALSTON GOES OFF: While the redshirt sophomore is undoubtedly having a breakout season, he took things to another level with a specific breakout game against San Diego State (Jan. 5), exploding for a career-high 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting – including a 10-of-12 effort from the free throw line. The 6-foot-8 guard is now No. 2 in scoring during Mountain West play at 20.0 points per game, as he started off the league slate with 10 points against Wyoming.
TOPS IN THE LEAGUE: While it's still extremely early in the Mountain West season, Boise State's good start in league play can also be seen by looking at the conference stats, as the Blue and Orange are first in scoring offense (78.5 ppg), scoring defense (59.5 ppg), scoring margin (+19.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (49.1%).
The No. 1 ranking in field goal percentage has also been a season-long trend for the Broncos, as they also tops in the league for the entire season at 47.3 percent.
HOBBS FINDING HIS GROOVE: Hobbs has been both efficient and effective in the team's two Mountain West games, as he is fifth in scoring (17.5 ppg) and sixth in field goal percentage (53.8%) in the MW in league play. His ability to score continues to be a prime indicator for Boise State's success, as the team is 17-5 (winning percentage of 77.3) when has scored in double figures throughout his career.
REBOUNDING AS A GROUP: The team's +3.3 average rebounding margin is fourth in the Mountain West and the Broncos have outrebounded the opposition in 11 of 15 games this season. Most notably, however, is the group rebounding mentality that Boise State has shown, as eight Broncos are averaging at least 2.5 rebounds per game.
