Broncos Rout Fresno State, Take Sole Possession Of First Place In MW

1/19/2019 7:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State turned a battle for first place between the Mountain West's two unbeaten teams into a no-doubter Saturday, running away to a 72-60 victory over Fresno State at the Save Mart Center.

The Broncos (14-2, 5-0 MW) jumped out to a 12-5 lead, and broke a four-point game open with a 19-6 run over the final 8:47 of the first half. Joyce Harrell hit her first four attempts of the game and scored eight of Boise State's first 12 points en route to posting the team's first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Fresno State's Kristina Cavey brought the Bulldogs back to within four at 24-20 with 8:47 left in the second quarter, but it was all Broncos from there. Jayde Christopher opened the attack with her second 3-pointer of the game, then, a possession later, found Riley Lupfer for the transition triple as the Bronco lead got to nine at 30-21. Lupfer scored five-straight points, including another trey, to answer a Bulldog bucket and swell the Bronco advantage to 14 at 37-23 with 3:58 on the clock. Christopher, pushing the Bronco transition attack, again ran it to perfection, driving and kicking out to a wide-open Ellie Woerner, whose corner 3 put the Broncos up 40-23.

Boise State would go on to take a 17-point lead at the break, 43-26.

"The first two and three quarters was as good basketball as we've played all year. Our bench was fantastic in the first half. We fatigued them a little bit in the second quarter, then we started subbing and we got on a roll," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell. "Everyone was into it, its fun when you and play a really good team and bring your best."

Boise State's depth proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, as nine Broncos found the scoresheet, The Bronco defense limited Fresno State to just its five starters providing points, and held the Bulldog bench scoreless. Fresno State's leading scorers on the season, Candice White and Maddi Utti, scored 38 of the Bulldogs' 60 points, led by White's 22.

"It tells a lot about our team. It tells that every single one of us can have a really good game. That's what we did today," said senior guard Marta Hermida, who scored all of her team-high 21 points in the second half. "We knew we were not going to win that game individually against Fresno, because they are pretty good, but as a team, that's our strength and I think we use it pretty good."

The Broncos wasted little time squashing any Bulldog hopes of a comeback, opening the second half with a 6-0 run to take a commanding 49-26 lead. Hermida was Boise State's catalyst in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 3-pointer on the first possession and scoring five of the points on that 6-0 run.. She finished the day 8-for-12 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc, with all five triples coming over the final 20 minutes.

Fresno State (11-5, 4-1 MW) would get to within 13 with 2:36 to go in a desperate comeback attempt, but they had no answer for Hermida, who hit yet another jumper with 2:17 to play and got the Broncos back on track with the 72-57 lead.

Lupfer would become the 21st member of Boise State's 1,000-Point Club with 3:47 to play, hitting a runner in the lane to beat the shot clock. Lupfer now stands at 1,001 career points.

Boise State returns to Taco Bell Arena this Wednesday for its only home game in this current four-game span, hosting Air Force for a 7 p.m. tip.
