BOISE, Idaho -Â Boise State remained unbeaten in Mountain West play and ran its winning streak to 10 Wednesday, defeating Air Force, 79-48, at Taco Bell Arena.
Redshirt junior point guard Jayde Christopher proved to quick and too explosive for the Falcons, slashing and kicking her way to 11 points and five assists while going 5-for-8 from the field. A'Shanti Coleman was the main beneficiary of Christopher's helpers, going 9-for-10 from the field for a game-high 18 points.
Â
The Bronco defense did its part, holding the Falcons to just 27.9 percent from the field (17-for-61), including just two 3-pointers in 12 attempts, and out-rebounding Air Force, 51-33. Boise State also blocked 11 shots, just one shy of the program single-game record.
"We played really hard the entire game," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell. "The third quarter was an emphasis for us because we let the foot off the gas in the third quarter the last two games on the road last weekend. We just kept pressuring."
Boise State (15-2, 6-0 MW), off to its first 15-2 start since 1977-78, outscored the Falcons (6-12, 2-5 MW), 17-7, over the final eight minutes of the second quarter to break the game open with a 39-24 lead at the break. Coleman and Christopher combined for 10 of those Bronco points in the run, with Riley Lupfer adding a 3-pointer and Jade Loville rattling in a buzzer-beater to cap it.
Christopher's driving layup on the opening possession of the second half ignited an 8-0 run that stretched the Bronco lead to 23 and ended any hopes of a Falcon comeback. Braydey Hodgins, who finished the game with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and three triples, added a layup underneath followed by four-straight points from Coleman to put the game out of reach.
Â
"[Jayde] has the best ball-handling skills that I have ever seen and I have been doing this for 32 years," Presnell said. "She just has a really innate ability to dribble the basketball. We work really hard at dribbling and some kids still struggle at it but she is just really gifted. Then combining that feel with her quickness, she is really hard to guard."
Freshman Jade Loville would hit her second 3-pointer of the night then twice beat a tired Air Force defense to find Ellie Woerner for a pair of layups, putting the Broncos up by 31 at 63-32 with 55 seconds to go in the third. Loville would finish the night with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Boise State opened the game on a 14-2 run, as Hodgins scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, over the game's opening 4:53. Christopher and Loville added driving layups to keep the Broncos up 12 at 18-6 before Air Force managed to get back into the game.
Â
Kaelin Immel scored four-straight points to pull the Falcons with eight with 1:34 to go in the first quarter. Briana Autrey then converted a three-point play and scored the final five points of the frame as Air Force closed on a 9-2 run to cut the Bronco lead to 20-15.
Boise State heads out of town again this weekend, playing its third road game over the current two-week stretch with a visit to Laramie, facing Wyoming Saturday at 1 p.m. MT.
