LAST TIME OUT: Boise State (8-11, 3-3) couldn't overcome another cold shooting night, as Air Force (8-11, 3-4) was able to make enough plays to claim the 74-60 win Tuesday night at Clune Arena. Derrick Alston was the game's high scorer with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The 24 points was the second-highest scoring game of his career. Lavelle Scottie led the Falcons with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Boise State played extremely well for the majority of the first half, taking the 30-17 lead at the 4:03 mark for its largest lead of the game (13 points). Air Force responded, however, and went on a 16-3 run to close the half to make it a 33-33 game at the break.
The Falcons held a slim lead for the better part of the second half, but the Broncos battled and eventually made it a one-point game at 53-52 with 7:06 remaining. Eventually, the defining point of the game came with 4:20 remaining when Air Force was awarded four-straight free throws after Zach Haney was called for a flagrant foul from a few plays back. The Falcons made 3-of-4 in the sequence and capped it off with a 3-pointer to make it a 63-55 AFA lead.
Haney also finished in double figures with 11 points to go with a team-high six rebounds and three blocks.
ABOUT WYOMING: The Cowboys recently picked up their first Mountain West win with a 59-46 defeat of San Jose State (Jan. 23) in Laramie. Wyoming is still led by Justin James – the No. 1 scorer in the league averaging 20.5 points per game. James also leads the team in rebounds (8.7 rpg), assists (4.1 apg) and steals (1.8 apg).
Wyoming is currently 10th in the Mountain West at 1-5, but was able to log victories over South Carolina (73-64) and Richmond (68-66) in the nonconference season before being severely affected by injury.
THE SERIES: The all-time series is tied at 14-14 after Boise State won the first matchup this season in Laramie, claiming the 69-55 win on Jan. 2. Alex Hobbs led the way with 17 points while Justinian Jessup (14) and Alston (10) also finished in double digits.
ANOTHER GEM FROM ALSTON: Derrick Alston's 24 points was the latest high-scoring game for the redshirt sophomore, as his three 20-point games this season is tied for first on the team. Averaging 15.3 points per game in six Mountain West games, Alston is 13th in the league for points in MW play. Most impressively, however, has been his ability to convert from the free throw line, as he has the top free throw percentage in conference play at 88.2 percent (30-of-34). He had a made free throw streak of 29 before having it broken midway through the second half at Air Force.
JESSUP CONTINUES TO SHOOT IT: After being a complimentary piece for his first two seasons, Jessup's efficiency and proficiency from three hasn't been affected at all in 2018-19 despite being the team's leading scorer at 12.8 points per game. He is a top-100 3-point shooter in the country when it comes to 3-point percentage (41.4% - 51st), 3-pointers per game (2.6 – 99th) and total 3-pointers (50 – 89th), not to mention he is No. 4 in the conference when it comes to minutes per game at 34.5.
REBOUND THAT BALL: After finishing 2017-18 as the top defensive rebounding percentage team in the country at 83.7 percent, the Broncos have once again picked up where they left off and are No. 9 in the country this season with a defensive rebounding percentage of 79.1. The Broncos have outrebounded the opposition in 14 of 19 games so far this season.
NO EASY BASKETS: When it comes to making opponents earn their points, few teams have been better in 2018-19 than Boise State. The Broncos are currently fifth in the country when it comes to average length of defensive possessions at 18.7 seconds, which is ahead of the likes of both Michigan (18.6 seconds – 8th) and Virginia (18.4 seconds – 14th). The ability to guard for a sustained period of time has shown through, as the team is currently fourth in the Mountain West in scoring defense, giving up an average of just 67.2 points per game.
GETTING LOOKS: On the offensive side of things, Boise State has done an especially good job of taking care of the ball in conference play. Averaging just 10.3 turnovers per game, Boise State is No. 2 in the league for fewest turnovers over the course of its first six MW games. Being able to finish possessions in a positive way has benefited the Blue and Orange, as they are averaging 71.3 points per game during the conference season.
