LAST TIME OUT: RJ Williams came off the bench to score 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go with four steals as Boise State breezeed to a 77-52 victory over Wyoming on Saturday. Alex Hobbs pitched in with 13 points and five rebounds and Marcus Dickinson scored 12 on four 3-pointers (tying a career high) for the Broncos. David Wacker also played well, grabbing a game-high seven rebounds to go with three assists and seven points.
Boise State did a fantastic job of limiting the Cowboys in the first half, holding the visitors to just 14 points for the 28-14 lead at the break. The 14 points were the fewest points that the Broncos have allowed in a half since giving up 14 against Air Force almost four years ago on Feb. 11, 2015.
Boise State never trailed on the day, extending its lead to as much as 31 late in the second half. The 25-point margin of victory was the largest of the season for the Blue and Orange. A major key to the victory was once again limiting Justin James, as the conference's leading scorer was limited to just seven points on 2-of-17 shooting. Between the two games against Boise State this season, James finished 3-of-31 from the field with just 14 points.
ABOUT COLORADO STATE: The Rams are led by do-it-all redshirt juniot forward Nico Carvacho, who leads the team in both points (15.4 ppg) and rebounds (12.5 rpg). He leads the Mountain West and is tied for sixth in the NCAA with 12 double-doubles this season. Redshirt senior guard J.D. Paige has tallied the most minutes for any Ram (33.1 mpg) and is right behind Carvacho at 15.3 points per game.
Colorado State has proven to be dangerous at Moby Arena in conference play, as the Rams are 3-0 at home with wins over Fresno State (74-65), New Mexico (91-76) and Air Force (87-64).
THE SERIES: The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Rams, 11-10. The Broncos have won the last four meetings against Colorado State, including an 87-54 victory in the most recent matchup at Moby Arena. Chandler Hutchison led the way in that game with 27 points while Justinian Jessup (16 points) and Zach Haney (13 points) also reached double-digit points.
LOCKDOWN DEFENSE: Wyoming's 14 first-half points were the fewest points that the Broncos have allowed in a half since giving up 14 against Air Force almost four years ago on Feb. 11, 2015. The stout defense carried over into the second half and lasted throughout the game, as Boise State held the Cowboys to 39.5 percent shooting from the field (17-of-43), the sixth game this season that the Broncos have held an opponent to under 40 percent shooting. Boise State has the No. 2 scoring defense in conference play, giving up just 63.4 points per game.
WILLIAMS BOUNCEBACK GAME: After getting off to a relatively slow start in conference play, RJ Williams bounced back in a big way with 18 points in just 19 minutes of play against Wyoming. The junior's strong performance was once again triggered by his work on the defensive end, as his four steals led to multiple breakaways and highlight-reel dunks. His efficiency Saturday (7-of-8 from the field) was also notable, as he now has seven games this season of shooting 70 percent or better from the field.
CONVERTING FROM INSIDE THE ARC: While Boise State was effective from three against Wyoming in making 9-of-26 from distance, the team's season-long ability to score has largely been a byproduct of its efficiency from inside the arc, as the Broncos have been a top 50 team in the country all season in two-point field goal percentage. Boise State is currently shooting 55.2 percent from two, ranking No. 40 in the NCAA. Seven of the Broncos' eight regular rotation players are shooting 40 percent or better on the season.
WACKER GIVES A LIFT IN FIRST START: Boise State gave the starting nod to David Wacker (his first of the season) against Wyoming, Saturday, and the redshirt senior made the most of his opportunity with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in 27 minutes. Wacker's proficiency on the offensive glass was exceptional, as he grabbed a career-high five offensive rebounds to help Boise State to a 16-4 advantage in second-chance points.
STEALS IGNITING THE BREAK: Boise State picked up a season-high 11 steals against Wyoming and converted them into 12 fast-break points. Coincidentally, the last time the Broncos recorded 10 or more steals was last season at Colorado State (Feb. 22, 2018) when they tallied 12.
