Lupfer Fires Broncos Into Tie For First
1/30/2019 10:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State had been waiting for Riley Lupfer to catch fire since the Mountain West season started, and Wednesday night, it happened. Lupfer, who hit a program-record 122 3-pointers a season ago, drained six in the contest and finished with a game-high 22 points in the Broncos' 70-57 victory over Colorado State at Taco Bell Arena.
Lupfer hit three triples in the first half to help stake the Broncos (16-3, 7-1 MW) to an 11-point halftime lead, and added three more in the team's 26-point third quarter to dig Colorado State (7-12, 1-7 MW) a inescapable hole. With the win, Boise State moved into a tie for first place in the Mountain West with New Mexico, which was idle Wednesday night.
"When it happens, you definitely want to keep shooting it. It's fun. It's fun to hear the crowd, its fun to see the score go up," Lupfer said about her performance.
Boise State hit 10 triples on the night, but also punished the Rams inside, as the trio of Rachel Bowers, A'Shanti Coleman, and Joyce Harrell combined for 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting. Bowers went 3-for-3 for six points in the opening quarter and finished the night 6-for-7 for 13 points, including a triple in the final minute. Harrell scored all six of her points Wednesday in the third as the Broncos built their lead to 17 at 60-43 entering the fourth.
Harrell's third-quarter buckets helped the Broncos up their lead to 39-25 just 1:43 into the half. After the Rams got it back to 11, Lupfer hit all three of her triples in the quarter over a span of just 1:13 to get the Broncos in front, 52-34, with 4:21 left in the frame.
"It's terrific for us. She had six threes, and I kinda knew some of those were going in. She really doesn't care who scores, she wants to win and that's what I love about her the most. Really proud of her shooting. She shot some daggers for us," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell.
Boise State built its cushion against the Rams early, as Bowers scored four-straight points followed by treys from Lupfer and Sofía Galerón spur a 10-1 run and give the Broncos a 16-6 lead. Bowers added her third bucket in as many attempts with 57 seconds left in the frame as the Broncos took an 18-10 lead.
Colorado State never really threatened, shooting just 30.4 percent (7-for-23) from the field and hitting just one triple in nine attempts in the opening half. For the game, the Rams hit just four triples and finished the game 18-for-49 from the field (36.7 percent). The Rams, led by 19 points from Lore Devos and 13 from Tatum Neubert, took advantage of a span of 6:38 without a field goal for the Broncos in the fourth, getting as close as nine at 65-56 with 1:24 to play. Devos scored eight points in a 10-2 Ram run which cut a 63-46 Boise State lead down to nine, but Bowers banked in her second-career 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to end the threat.
"We turned it over a couple of times. We did come out the third quarter and did well. I was disappointed in the last six minutes of the game," Presnell said.
