Broncos Fall At TCU

12/1/2019 6:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball

FORT WORTH, Texas - Another slow start cost Boise State Sunday, as the Broncos dropped a 77-65 contest to host TCU at the 2019 Maggie Dixon Classic.

A scoreless spell of 5:08 in the opening quarter combined with seven turnovers and 5-for-13 shooting put the Broncos in an 11-point hole at 22-11. TCU (6-0), led by three 3-pointers and 14 points in the first half from Lauren Heard, upped the lead to 37-23 by halftime.

"I was disappointed in the first quarter. We didn't handle their 2-3 [zone], got some turnovers, got a little insecure, and the rim shrunk on us." said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell. "Next thing we know we're down 22-11 and couldn't battle back."

Riley Lupfer hit her first 3-point attempt of the game for the Broncos, and A'Shanti Coleman banked in an easy layup from Jayde Christopher to bring the Broncos to within one at 6-5 with 8:08 left in the first. But the Broncos (4-4) would miss their next six attempts, and turn the ball over four times until Rachel Bowers ended the drought with three minutes to go in the frame to cut the TCU lead to 16-7.

The Broncos didn't score until 3:03 had elapsed in the second quarter, when Braydey Hodgins' free throw made it 25-12. TCU's lead got to as many as 15 at 31-16 before Hodgins scored five-straight points to bring the Broncos to within 10 at 31-21 and create a small spark.

But Heard would score three-straight for the Horned Frogs, and Adeola Akomolafe's jumper with 45 seconds left got the TCU cushion to 14 at the break.

TCU would make 10 3-pointers in the contest, led by three apiece from Heard and Jaycee Bradley. Heard would finish with a game-high 25 points. The Horned Frogs controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Broncos, 43-27, with 15 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points.

Mallory McGwire would lead the Broncos Sunday with 11 points and nine rebounds. Hodgins added 11 points with five assists. The Broncos were held to season-low five 3-pointers, going just 5-of-13 from deep.

Boise State would get as close as 11 at 51-40 following Ellie Woerner's three-point play, but Bradley would cap a 6-0 Horned Frog run with a 3-pointer, and TCU would get the lead back up to 57-40. The Broncos wouldn't get closer than 14 the rest of the way.
