Game Notes

THE GAME: Boise State (11-14, 6-6) will play the back half of its California road trip this Saturday, Feb. 16 at San Diego State (15-9, 7-4) with tip set for 4 p.m. PT.

WATCH: Chris Hassel and Richard Jefferson will work the game on CBS Sports Network.

LISTEN LIVE: The game will broadcast on both 670 KBOI AM and 93.1 KTIK FM with Bob Behler and Abe Jackson on the call.

LAST TIME OUT: The Broncos and Bulldogs battled Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center in a game that featured 16 lead changes with neither team pulling ahead by more than six points, but Fresno State was able to make just enough plays down the stretch to come away with the 65-63 win.

Alex Hobbs led the way with 18 points to go with four rebounds, three steals and two assists in 33 minutes of play. No other Bronco reached double-digit points, but five others were able to score seven or more: Pat Dembley (9), David Wacker (8), Justinian Jessup (8), RJ Williams (7) and Marcus Dickinson (7).

Boise State was relatively limited offensively, shooting just 36.7 percent from the field (22-of-60) and connecting on only three 3-pointers (3-of-17) – the team's fewest threes this season. The team was accurate from the free throw line, however, making 16-of-17 for its second-highest free throw percentage of the season (94.1%).

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs currently sit in fourth place in the Mountain West standings thanks to a 7-4 record. SDSU is winners of five of its last six games and is 5-0 in MW home games at Viejas Arena.

Jalen McDaniels is the No. 2 scorer in the MW during conference play, averaging 19.9 points per game. McDaniels is also the team's leading rebounder on the season (8.6 rpg) while Devin Mitchell is tops in assists averaging 4.5 a game.

PREVIOUS MATCHUP: Derrick Alston dropped 30 points and Boise State was able to throttle the Aztecs, 88-64, on Jan. 5 back at Taco Bell Arena. Alston was sensational while Alex Hobbs also dropped in 18 points.

The Blue and Orange's 24-point victory gave the team its largest margin of victory over San Diego State in program history.

Boise State led by 23 late in the first half and went into the break with a 46-25 lead. San Diego State opened the second half with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to eleven but that was as close as the Aztecs (8-6, 0-1) would get, as the Broncos led by as many as 26 late in the second half.

THE SERIES: San Diego State has an 11-7 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. The Broncos have a 2-5 record against the Aztecs at Viejas, and have had recent success under head coach Leon Rice, picking up the two road victories in 2016 (66-63) and 2015 (56-46).

ANOTHER CLOSE LOSS: Boise State's two-point loss at Fresno State was the latest one-possession heartbreak for the Blue and Orange. The result was the sixth loss of the season decided by three points or less for Boise State, who is now 1-6 in games decided by three points or less this season. The only other season in program history where the team suffered six losses by three points or less was the 1983-84 season.

According to kenpom.com's luck rating, Boise State is the second most unlucky team in NCAA Division I in 2018-19.

NATIONAL CONTEXT OF ALSTON'S JUMP: Derrick Alston – a double-digit scorer in nine of 12 Mountain West games this season – is not only on track for the largest points per game jump for a returning player in program history (set to surpass Chandler Hutchison), but he also ranks high in the context of the rest of the country.

After averaging 0.6 ppg as a redshirt freshman, Alston is averaging 11.9 now in his redshirt sophomore season. The 11.3 ppg jump is the sixth highest for any returning player on the same team from 2017-18 to 2018-19 in NCAA Division I. Alston is in the company of Murray State's breakout guard, Ja Morant, who ranks fifth in the NCAA with an 11.6 ppg jump from last season to this season.

MONEY FROM THE FREE THROW LINE: Boise State was composed at the charity stripe against Fresno State, going 16-of-17 for its second-highest single-game free throw percentage of the season (94.1%). The Broncos have the second-highest free throw percentage for any MW team in conference play at 75.8 percent.
