BOISE, Idaho - Boise State couldn't do enough to stop UNLV and its 3-point barrage Wednesday night, as the Rebels claimed the 83-72 victory at Taco Bell Arena.
While the Broncos (10-13, 5-5) did well offensively in shooting 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field, the Rebels (12-10, 6-4) were also able to excel in going 28-of-52 (53.8%) including a 14-of-26 effort from behind the arc. The 14 made threes are the most that the Broncos have given up this season.
Derrick Alston was the high scorer for the Broncos with 17 points while Alex Hobbs (16) and Zach Haney (13) also finished in double digits. The story of the night for the Blue and Orange, however, came in the form of Justinian Jessup.
Jessup was 2-of-5 from behind the arc, giving him 200 career threes. He is now the fastest Bronco to get to 200 career threes in program history. Jessup did it in 87 games, surpassing the previous record held by Abe Jackson (91 games; 1998-2002).
The 200 career threes put him in seventh place on the Boise State all-time list, surpassing Eric Lane (2003-07) and his 199. Jessup is now chasing Paul Noonan (2007-11) and his 211.
While the Broncos were unable to limit the Rebels from distance, they did do an outstanding job of limiting the UNLV offensive rebounding attack, holding the Rebels to a season-low four offensive rebounds.
Boise State played well in the first 20 minutes and held the 43-39 lead at the half, shooting 61.5 percent from the field (16-of-26) - its second-highest field goal percentage in a half this season.
UNLV took its first lead of the game (46-45) early in the second half at the 17:24 mark and led for the much of the rest of the game. The Broncos tied the game at 68-68 after Hobbs converted a layup, but the Rebels answered with a 3-pointer on the other end to reclaim a lead they would not relinquish.
The Broncos will play the back end of their homestand this Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon at Taco Bell Arena when they welcome San Jose State (3-18, 0-9).
