Game Notes
THE GAME: Boise State (11-17, 6-9) looks to change its luck with a road trip to Las Vegas as the Broncos will take on UNLV (15-14, 9-7) this Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. PT at the Thomas & Mack Center.
WATCH: The game will broadcast on CBS Sports Network with Rich Waltz (play-by-play) and Dan Dickau (analyst) set to call the action.
LISTEN: Once again the game will air on 670 KBOI AM and 93.1 KTIK FM with Bob Behler and Abe Jackson working the game.
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State couldn't overcome a cold shooting night from the field as Colorado State was able to grab the 76-62 win Wednesday night at Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos shot 39.7 percent from the field, going 27-of-68. The team was also just 5-of-27 from three (18.5%), as well.
Justinian Jessup led the way with a career-high 25 points. The performance gave him his fifth 20-point game of the season. Alex Hobbs (12 points) and RJ Williams (10 points) also finished in double figures for the Broncos.
Boise State trailed 33-26 at the half after Jessup was able to pace the home team with 11 points in the first 20 minutes of play. After trailing for most of the second half by double digits, Boise State mounted a run late and cut the deficit to seven at 62-55 with 5:42 to play, but CSU was able to re-extend the lead and eventually claim the win.
The Colorado State victory was the first for the Rams in Boise since 1991. The Bronco loss gives the two teams a split in the conference regular season. Boise State claimed the 70-68 win back on Jan. 29 in Fort Collins, Colo.
ABOUT THE REBELS: UNLV is currently alone in fifth place in the conference standings with a 9-7 MW record after falling 89-73 to No. 12 Nevada on Wednesday night in Reno.
The Rebels sport a well-rounded offensive attack with three active players averaging 12 or more points: Joel Ntambwe (12.0 ppg), Amauri Hardy (13.3 ppg) and Kris Klyburn (13.5 ppg). UNLV continues to hang its hat on rebounding, as its average +5.0 advantage on the glass ranks second in the conference while its offensive rebounding percentage of 34.5 percent is No. 12 in the NCAA.
THE SERIES: Boise State holds a 9-8 advantage in the all-time series and has won four out of the last five matchups against UNLV. The Blue and Orange also hold a two-game win streak against the Rebels at Thomas & Mack.
The Rebels bested the Broncos, however, in the meeting earlier this season in earning the 83-72 win on Feb. 6 at Taco Bell Arena. UNLV cashed in 14 triples – the most threes that the Broncos have given up this season – and won the second half, 44-29, to negate a 43-39 Boise State lead at the half.
Derrick Alston (17 points), Hobbs (16 points) and Jessup (15 points) all excelled offensively against UNLV.
JESSUP ALMOST TO 1,000: After scoring a career-high 25 points against Colorado State, Jessup needs just five points against UNLV to reach 1,000 career points, which would make him the 29th 1,000-point scorer in program history. If he is to get it done against the Rebels it would be in his 93rd career game as a Bronco, making him the 15th-fastest player to 1,000 career points in program history.
Jessup – who currently ranks No. 12 in the Mountain West in scoring at 14.9 point per game – has reached double-digit points in 11 of 15 conference games, including back-to-back 20-point games.
WING PRODUCTION: While Jessup has been the most consistent, well-rounded player for the Broncos over the course of the season, his fellow starting wings Hobbs and Alston have more than proven their worth as scorers. The top three scorers on the team at 13.8 ppg (Jessup), 12.4 ppg (Hobbs) and 12.0 ppg (Alston), the trio has combined for 1,035 points in 2018-19 – over 50 percent of the team's scoring. The three aren't volume scorers, either, as all Jessup, Hobbs and Alston all shoot between 44 and 48 percent from the field.
HARWELL GIVING BIG MINUTES: After playing just 95 minutes in the team's first 13 games of the conference season, redshirt junior guard Malek Harwell has logged 51 combined minutes in the last two games against Utah State and Colorado State. Harwell has made the most of his opportunity coming off the bench, netting a career-high eight points (2-of-3 from behind the arc) against the Aggies and grabbing a career-high eight rebounds against the Rams. Harwell's play has undoubtedly given the Broncos an extra layer of depth.
